Meet Raul of Family First Pediatric Care

Today we’d like to introduce you to Raul.

Hi Raul , so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My parents have held this Pediatrics practice in Hialeah since 2003. For the longest time it has been just my father as the physician and my mother (who did complete medical school but did not purse that career further) as the office manager. They managed to serve our community well all these years with just each other. My time watching my father become a Pediatrician and watching my parents grow the practice is part of the reason I went into Pediatrics. Seeing how much joy they had every day in helping their patients, seeing kids grow up over the years and come back to visit because of the wonderful relationships they fostered, it all showed me how beautiful pediatrics is and how it is the future for me. I completed my medical training in July of 2025 and became co-owner of the practice with my parents, with the goal of helping them secure their well-earned retirement and uphold the legacy they left at Family First Pediatric Care. I went from training at Holtz Childrens hospital in downtown Miami to back home in Hialeah serving this wonderful community that I hold so dear to my heart.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. I knew since I was little I wanted to be a doctor, but that journey in and of itself has been a difficult one. During my time in medical school at the University of Miami I had to balance being a full time medical student while also raising my two beautiful children. It was difficult to find that balance between my studies, constant exams, clinical rotations, and learning how to be a father. It is something I would not have been able to accomplish without the support of my wonderful wife and amazing family. After 4 difficult years it was a stark transition to my residency training at Holtz Childrens Hospital in downtown Miami. The life of a resident physician was difficult, especially with two young kids at home, as I tried to navigate 24hr shifts, nights at the hospital, working the ED and the ICU, and learning to serve some of the most underserved in our community. After 3 years of training it was out into the real world and straight into private practice with my parents. My training had come a long way in helping me be the Pediatrician I hoped to be, but there was a lot when it came to managing a business that I had yet to learn. Me and my parents have been working hard now to navigate running a pediatric practice in an environment today that is wrought with misinformation. With all of the confusion out there regarding immunizations, what is safe or unsafe for children, it is more difficult than ever to be a parent. That is why we have always taken pride in putting our families first and providing our community with a reliable and evidence-based source of information, working hard to overcome these struggles by forming strong relationships with our patients so they know they can always trust our recommendations come with their children’s best interests at heart.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Our practice is a Pediatrics Practice, which means we see children from newborns to typically 18 years old, though there may be some that refuse to leave us. I joined my parents practice in July of 2025, but they have been serving our community for over 20 years. Our practice has always been one where families come first. Our families know they can call us at any time of the day with their concerns and it will be one of us that answers, not just an answering machine. It is a practice where families are not rushed and we ensure parents have the time they need to ask questions and discuss their concerns. In a time where large group organizations, where hundreds of patients rotate in and out every day, often with a different physician at each visit, we work hard to hold true to the values that have allowed us to thrive for over 20 years. We welcome all families into our practice as we are accepting new patients.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
As mentioned in previous questions, my parents are the heart and soul of this practice. Despite distance, insurance changes, or even already being over 18 years old, patients and their families would refuse to see anyone else. They have had patients who they cared for since they were young come and bring their own children to the practice. My parents never pressured me into medicine. The only thing they insisted on is whatever I choose, that it be something that brings me joy. Well, seeing them work growing up the joy permeated all over. It was infectious. And as I started my career in medicine, that same joy they felt became my own. I get to wake up every morning and come to work with my parents, my idols. It is a blessing that is difficult to describe.
