Today we’d like to introduce you to Ramses Garcia.
Ramses, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My journey with photography started a couple of years ago. I’ve always been into creative media. For years I took TV Production in high school, and when I left high school, I had original plans to study film. Life happened, and with parent’s that we’re concerned about me moving away to Orlando to attend Full Sail — I decided against it.
I thought, maybe it wasn’t for me if my parents were truly asking me to stay, and the cost was astronomical. I started studying business, and eventually got my degree in Marketing. But honestly, I’ve never felt fulfilled with what I was doing. Until I met my wife; my wife Anette noticed my creative itch, and for one Christmas she went all out and bought me my first DSLR.
Previous to that, she noticed I was always camera savvy since when we used to travel, I was always able to get what she thought was awesome shot’s. When I opened the DSLR, I was completely intrigued because I was used to just recording, and doing editing on my computer and taking hours upon hours to get to what was my final product.
Digital photos were different. I would snap a photo, and then I slowly started learning what it took to get a great shot. I started doing what everyone does, I started taking photo’s of my family, & dogs, and eventually, I started taking my camera to concerts. So much, that for a season I became a concert photographer, and I got to shoot some of my favorite bands.
Flash forward to a couple years ago. At my day job, I had a friend who invited me to a “party” he was having for his family, at his house. He told me to bring my camera since he knew I always posting on Instagram photo’s and he told me to give a party a shot. What I didn’t know was. This party was a small wedding.
One of which, was for a former MLB player that was in his family, along with several players that were attendees. I totally freaked out, and I remember telling him I’ve never shot a wedding before. He told me “dude no pressure” just try your best and see what you get. So that night I got my first crack at capturing a wedding. I remember my hands shaking every single time I was taking a photo, not knowing what I was capturing would be good enough for them.
At the end of the night, I made a quick copy of the files for the couple, and the next day they texted me saying they loved the photos. After that, I got truly intrigued with wedding photography. I went on Instagram and started adding any photographer that I feel, would fuel my inspiration and would help me develop an eye to what I may be possibly doing.
To this day, my feed is filled with nothing but wedding photographers. I look at them as inspiration, and it helps me stay focused on what I’m looking to what I’m aspiring to capture. To this day, capturing Weddings & Elopements are my passion.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I don’t think it’s been an easy road. Here in Miami especially there is a surplus of photographers. I’ve tried to differentiate myself as much as I can to what I call the typical “Miami” style. Photography is something that you have to try your best to stand out from the crowd as much as you can especially in a saturated market.
We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I try to be different when it, and bright, airy color’s that most photographers capture here. I love darker colors, along with anything that’s natural. I love shooting in Miami’s version of forests, parks, or beaches. I draw a lot of inspiration from the West Coast of the United States, as my colors symbolize a darker, warmer palette. I love greenery, and I always try to find non-traditional places to take photo’s, even if it means we have to drive or get a little dirty to get the shot lol.
I try to find the right match of clients. The perfect couples for me are ones who are intimate, adventurous, who don’t mind getting a little messy and trying to new things. They love the outdoors. They can be genuine around their significant other, whether being serious or busting out laughing. I describe my wedding day style as photo-journalistic, as I will be a fly on the wall for most of the day, capturing true moments.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
To me, success is to continue getting amazing clients to work with. I’m thankful for every single client I have worked with in the past because it has helped me grow to where I am as a creative. I hope one day to be a full-time destination elopement photographer. That’s my dream occupation.
