Meet Ramon Poleo of Monchiart

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ramon Poleo.

Ramon, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I entered the world of tattooing because of my passion for drawing, design and art, something with which I have been related since I was a child since I was seven I was in drawing classes. Then I studied industrial design in the city of Caracas, Venezuela, then emigrated to Colombia and living in Colombia I discovered that I did not want to spend the rest of my life behind a computer, the truth is that I spent my days drawing I always had the goal of doing at least a daily drawing, although I liked my career as a designer but was not 100% what I wanted.

Soon after living in Colombia I decided to buy a tattoo kit and try, basically I wanted to see some of my drawings on someone’s skin, I never really saw it as a profession to which I would dedicate myself at that moment, it would be just as a hobby, a good friend who had some knowledge about how to assemble the machine and what to do, he explained the basics and that day he decided that I tattoo him, I started doing it to friends just for fun, in this point I had already given up my job as an industrial designer I was living in Colombia without a job and with this new hobby to which I dedicated 24 hours a day, after a couple of months, it was my turn to look for another job as a designer but my Wife told me that why I was not looking for a job as a tattoo artist if it was really what I was passionate about, I did that, I designed a card which had my Instagram and phone number.

And I went in search of studios throughout the city of Bogota, after two hours of having left the first card I received the call of a studio which was very interested in all the illustrations the saw in my Instagram at that time, I met With them they realized that I did not have the experience as a tattoo artist but they also gave me the opportunity, after spending a couple of years and learning a lot in that studio I decided to create my own workspace and do my studio in the city of Bogota. At this time I had some recognitions I had had the opportunity to travel and have won awards at conventions in countries such as Panama, Chile and even Colombia after a while Miami tattoo co contacted me they are t interested in my work and that you would like me to be part of your team as a resident artist, and I have been working with them for almost a year and showing my art in this city.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It is not easy, it is a bit of dedication and a lot of time, I think that the biggest obstacle in frustration at the beginning the results I saw on the skin was not as I had it on paper or as I imagined, it was difficult to handle because they are people who trust one as an artist for something they will have a whole life, it’s just a matter of time and dedication.

We’d love to hear more about your art.
I dedicate myself 100% to the custom tattoo I do not make design copies, I do not repeat design, I do not make ideas of internet I sell some exclusivity to each of my clients, I currently make several styles such as realism, blackwork and geometry, I am looking for people to identify my work as art, not as a tattoo, and I think that’s why people look for my job.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would like to have started before maybe having discovered this passion much earlier and not at the age of 25 I am currently 30, I feel I did not waste time studying industrial design but it would have been incredible to have spent that time doing art and tattoos.
