Meet Nerly Fertil

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nerly Fertil.

Hi Nerly, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
The earliest time I remember singing was at five years old at my school’s talent show. I started writing songs in the 2nd grade and my inspiration came from a mix of gospel and R&B artists like Destiny’s Child, Monica, Tamela Mann, Kierra Sheard, etc. I’ve definitely have grown a lot since then but what keep me going was my love for music, creating lyrics, and helping others express themselves through songs. My family and friends have also supported me throughout my journey and are the reason I also love singing and writing. I come from a musical family. My brothers play instruments and my sisters sing as well. With their support and the motivation from my choir directors, teachers, and friends, I started to take it so seriously as an adult. I created a YouTube channel in college, started booking gigs and recording original music with our singing group Ignite. Eventually, it lead me to recording my singles and solo EP “Love Chronicles”.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
There have definitely been some struggles along the way. I’m not a perfectionist but when it comes to music and recording in the studio, it can bring it out sometimes, lol. I have learned to calm down and take these moments in because honestly you’ll never be truly satisfied with everything. Working with other musicians and singers can also be challenging. Being an independent artist comes with handling the business side of music too. It can confusing, frustrating, and tedious dealing with forms, contracts, copyrights, etc. There was a lot of maturing I had to do and self-awareness that I had to realize. As an artist, you decide how you want others to see you and you have to know yourself before you introduce yourself to the world.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I have different passions but the two main ones are education and music. Professionally, I work in higher education as Student Success Coach and when I’m not doing that, I work on my music. So, over the past few years, I’ve been focusing on my Youtube channel where I focus on lifestyle, encouragement, and music. I love encouraging my listening with scripture and positivity. We need more of it in this world. I’ve also been releasing new original music. My first single and music video was released in February 2020 in the midst of the pandemic. It was very hard to manage and handle the business side and artist side but I learned so much. I’m proud of being an independent artist and my start of leaving a positive mark in this world. I wanted to write songs to inspire and encourage people, to speak about God’s love, and to express love. I think that sets me apart. My songs were written in my low and happy moments, during and after my prayer time. My music, words, voice, and experiences all set me apart.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I was mostly quiet and shy. I still am sometimes. In school, I was the student that got straight As for conduct because of that. Even though I was quiet, once I felt comfortable around you it wasn’t long until conversations started. I loved playing outside with my little sister, Ashly, and just spending time with my family and friends. I sang and danced all around the house. I grew up in a Haitian traditional and conservative household. My parents stressed Lekol, Legliz, Lakay” which means “school, church, and home”. I joined the choir at my church in middle school and in high school, I came out of my shell a little bit and started getting into makeup, hair, and singing more on stages. By college, I was already leading worship services and singing at other churches and events. I think my upbringing has shaped me into who I am today and has made me more conscious of the things I need to improve and the things I love.
