Hi Michael , we’re so thrilled to have you sharing your story with us today. Maybe we can kick things off by having you introduce yourself to our readers? We’d love to have you go into your story and how you got to where you are today.
I appreciate you having me on! Professionally, my story started when I was young. I became enamored with a single question “How do we verify knowledge?” This inquisitive nature began when I engaged with public figures who challenged the status quo, such as comedians. I then began to read books that challenged my worldview.
It wasn’t until university that I realized the limitations of my knowledge, so I sought to correct it by taking a generalist approach to life. Most of my schooling at this point occurred outside of the classroom. I feverishly consumed all that I felt I had no knowledge of: I studied music, from classical to modern; I delved into philosophy with a focus on postmodernism; I practiced my artistic talents to nurture creativity, and I engaged in challenging conversations both inside and outside the classroom. With the friends I had at the time, including my current business partner Nic Spoors, we discussed the knowledge we came across on an almost daily basis. We talked about math, politics, economics, epistemology, history, logic, art, cinema, and society until the late hours of the morning. We were determined to challenge ourselves early and often in various thought processes. This naturally led us to challenge ourselves through our actions.
Towards the end of 2016, Nicolas Spoors and I decided to join forces and embark on an incredibly daunting venture: starting an investment fund out of our dorm. Not only did we seek to begin one of the most challenging businesses to compete in, but we aimed to do something even more difficult: employ strategies that were entirely proprietary, unique, and innovative at their most fundamental level.
Please tell us more about your brand, Infinitary Fund
Infinitary Fund is a next-generation investment fund with the mission of building the most powerful system we can imagine for both mathematics and investing. We do this by focusing our efforts on fundamental mathematical research in order to generate our models. Not only can our models describe the market, but they also provide partial causal reasoning, enabling us to understand the WHY behind the movements. To deviate from the outdated techniques of current statistical models, we have created what appears to be an entirely new data analytics technique which we call the Bridge Method. We take immense pride in our relentless commitment to discovering the truth and revolutionizing the way our society views mathematics as a field. Our ultimate goal is to merge the forces of the financial industry with the academic industry to create a powerhouse of mathematical research. The benefits we envision are profound practical applications, as we aim to provide new and powerful tools for our data-driven world. An example of what we hope to achieve is demonstrated through the Bridge Method: our model is not only applicable to the financial industry, but we have also found efficacy in analyzing non-financial data, such as predicting Covid hotspots in the U.S. through pandemic data.
