Meet Melissa Alton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Alton.

Melissa, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started my own law firm after becoming a mom. My son was three months old when I resigned from my old firm and decided to be a Solo Practitioner. It was a big learning curve to adapt to managing a business, handling administrative tasks (billing, scheduling, clerical, etc.), AND also managing my clients and doing the legal work itself. However, it was also extremely rewarding and gratifying to have complete control over my own cases from start to finish and venture into new practice areas, all while still spending more time with my new baby.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It was as terrifying as it was exciting to make the leap to be my own boss! Some of the biggest challenges were creating a new schedule and routine that worked for me, my growing family, and all while growing my business. I went from working out of our home and at random Starbucks locations, to a cubicle, to eventually a steady office space with a spacious conference room to accommodate our clients and all of our office needs. As my business and my client base grew, I learned more and more about how to balance my work with my family life, which, as is the case for any working mom, has always been the biggest challenge.

We’d love to hear more about your practice.
Alton Law represents small and growing businesses in transactional and corporate matters, focusing on drafting and preparing service agreements, contracts, and legal notices for their websites, employees and contractors. We also handle immigration and personal injury cases. I am really proud of the fact that we are a family run business. My husband, who is also an attorney, joined me at Alton Law in August of 2018. I feel truly blessed that we work together, and since we each bring our unique personalities and skillsets to any case we’re working on, that diverse perspective is a benefit to our clients.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I’ve come to associate success with a feeling of fulfillment and happiness. Whether that happiness is felt after spending a sunny afternoon playing outside with our kids, or whether I feel fulfilled after guiding a client through a difficult business transaction and providing them honest and reliable representation. Success comes in many shapes and forms and is different for everyone but if at the end of the day, I feel fulfilled and happy with what I’m doing, then that checks the boxes for me on how I am striving for success.
