Today we’d like to introduce you to Melanie Cap.
Hi Melanie, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
People often ask me why I started CAP Speech Therapy, and the answer is simple, I wanted to create the kind of practice I would want for my own family.
I’ve always loved working with children, but early in my career I realized that many families were struggling to get the support they needed. Long waitlists, rushed appointments, and therapy that didn’t always fit into a child’s real life left parents feeling overwhelmed and the child’s progress slow. I knew there had to be a better way.
About 12 years ago, I took a leap of faith and started CAP Speech Therapy with the goal of making speech therapy more personal, family-centered, and meaningful. I wanted therapy to happen where children naturally learn and communicate, whether that’s home, at school, on the playground, or even at the local library. When children are comfortable and engaged, that’s where the magic happens.
Building the practice wasn’t always easy. Like many small business owners, there were plenty of long days, challenges, and moments where I questioned myself. But every time I saw a child say their first word, communicate a need independently, or gain confidence because they finally felt understood, it reminded me exactly why I started.
Today, CAP Speech Therapy has been serving families for over a decade, and I’m incredibly proud that we’ve been able to help hundreds of children strengthen their communication skills and help parents feel confident in using the strategies and tools learned from each speech session. We work with children who have speech delays, articulation challenges, language disorders, autism, feeding difficulties, and more. Our approach is individualized because no two children, or families, are the same.
One of the things I hear most from parents is that they finally feel supported. We don’t just work with the child for 30-60 minutes and send them home. We partner with families, educate parents, and create practical strategies they can use everyday. Communication doesn’t just happen during therapy, it happens during breakfast, bath time, bedtime stories, at the grocery store, and family outings.
At the end of the day, that’s what CAP Speech Therapy is really about. Helping children find their voice while giving parents the confidence and support they deserve.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not at all. Like most entrepreneurs, I’ve learned that building a business is rarely a straight path.
When I first started CAP Speech Therapy, I was wearing every hat imaginable. I was the speech therapist, scheduler, receptionist, marketer, biller, and business owner all at once. I spent countless evenings catching up on paperwork after seeing clients all day. There were definitely moments when I wondered if I could keep it all going.
One of the biggest challenges has been finding the right people. It’s not just about finding the right therapists, it’s also about finding the right office staff. The first person a parent speaks with when they call CAP Speech Therapy sets the tone for their entire experience. Families are often reaching out because they’re worried, overwhelmed, or searching for answers, so having someone who is warm, compassionate, organized, and genuinely invested in helping them is incredibly important.
Finding the right therapists is also crucial. In pediatric therapy, families are trusting us with their children, so hiring isn’t about finding someone with the right credentials. It’s about finding therapists who genuinely connect with children and share the same values of compassion, collaboration, and high-quality care. I’d rather grow more slowly than compromise that.
Like many business owners, I’ve also had to learn things that were never taught in graduate school. Like running a business, marketing, managing a team, navigating insurance, and adapting to constant changes in the field. It’s been a continuous learning experience.
But every challenge has made me a better clinician and a better leader. Looking back, I wouldn’t change the journey because it shaped the practice it is today.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about CAP Speech Therapy?
CAP Speech Therapy is a pediatric speech and language therapy practice built around one simple belief: children make the most progress when therapy feels natural, engaging, and personalized to who they are.
We specialize in helping children build the skills they need to communicate, connect, and participate more confidently in everyday life. Our services include speech-language therapy for articulation challenges, language development, early intervention, autism support, feeding therapy, and oral motor therapy. We work with children in the environments where they are most comfortable, whether that’s at home, at school, in the community, or through teletherapy. Because communication doesn’t only happen in a therapy room.
A meaningful milestone for CAP Speech Therapy has been expanding beyond South Florida to serve families in Hawaii. It has been incredibly rewarding to see the same personalized approach that families valued in South Florida make an impact in another community as well.
What sets CAP Speech Therapy apart from other practices, is our family-centered approach. We don’t believe in a one-size-fits all model. Every child has their own strengths, personality, learning style, and goals, and we create therapy plans around that individual child. We also believe parents are an essential part of the process.
I’m most proud of the reputation we’ve built as a practice that truly cares. We have gotten overwhelming, heart-felt feedback over the years, and continue to run as a 5-star review practice on google. We want parents to know they are not just another appointment on our schedule, their child and their family matter to us. When they sign up with CAP they become part of our family.
What does success mean to you?
I define success by staying true to our mission while continuing to grow. For me, success means building something that reflects my values, creating a team I’m proud of, and knowing we are making a positive difference in the community.
