Today we’d like to introduce you to Mayra Mateus.
Mayra, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
When I was 16, after a difficult transition with my mother, we moved from Colombia to Miami to live in a one-room apartment. For economic reasons, I held down three jobs at a pizzeria, a department store and a bakery. It was at the pizzeria where I discovered my passion for art when I offered myself to the owners to design the restaurant’s menu on a wall for the first time. Inspired in 2018, I created a brand that I trademarked around a piggy bank character and created a portfolio of various mediums and pieces incorporating this symbol. The message I portray with the piggy banks is “Saving Dreams,” to remind people that pursuing your dreams is more important than focusing on money.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Just the fact of being a woman, young and not having any connections it was a big challenge to make people to take me seriously in the arts industry.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a muralist, painter, sculptor and brand owner. My focus is to bring a message through my art. I created my own piggybank cartoon that represents the importance of pursuing dreams and how dreams have more value than money. My art have given an outlet to express myself and hopefully inspire others with this message. What sets me apart from others is that I’m bringing a message through cool modern art.
What matters most to you?
That people can feel connected and identified with my art and my story, inspiring them to fight for their dreams.
