Today we’d like to introduce you to Matt Corwin.
Matt, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
In the spring of 2014, CWS launched its first water sports camp in Boca Raton. CWS was born out of Matt Corwin’s desire to share his love of the water and outdoors. Through CWS many students and adults have learned how to surf, paddleboard, and wakeboard. Over the last 4 years, we have expanded to offer several weeks of water sports camp and other events including Challenge Camp which is our way of giving back to the community. In all of our events, we aim to provide the thrill of new achievement no matter what the ability level. At our core, we believe that family, good friends and faith are most important.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In our first year, we started small by offering two weeks of water sports camp. We quickly saw a bigger demand and added another week that summer. Through that process, we learned more about scaling our business and prioritized long term planning before the summer begins. Last summer we added an outreach camp called Challenge Camp. For that camp, we schedule local business professionals to share with middle and high school students about career paths. Launching Challenge Camp was exciting as we collaborated with a large group of donors and speakers. We were very blessed to have a multitude of business sponsors. Through that expansion we also saw how important preparation is for organizing big events.
Please tell us about CWS Camps.
Our water sports camp provides a boutique experience because we teach in a small group setting. We keep a 4 to 1 camper to counselor ratio and most weeks are limited to 8 to 16 campers. The majority of our days our spent on the ski boat teaching wake boarding, kneeboarding and waterskiing. When we are not on the boat, we spend time at the beach teaching surfing. Recently, we have been stoked to give back and offer Challenge Camp. Being able to take our passion for a good time and blend it with teaching kids to plan for their future has been very rewarding.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
When I was 10, I can remember having a great time sledding in the snow with my younger sister. Something about the speed, the cold and the crashes make it a great memory. Now, we take my nephew and nieces to Colorado for a taste of the cold and some sledding. I still find joy in the childlike wonder of enjoying the outdoors. Someone once said, “Happy is he who still loves something he loved in the nursery: He has not been broken in two by time; he is not two men but one, and he has saved not only his soul but his life.” Good words to remember to stay young at heart!

This is so great! Thank you so much for giving CWS this public affirmation. Great photos and great article. I know from watching and hearing the responses from participants that the kids have a ball and gain confidence from trying new things. With CWS they are enjoying the beautiful out doors in our tropical state. Matt forgot to mention they also enjoy snorkeling in the ocean on some of their beach days. For many kids these are famous firsts!
