Meet Mark Menagh of Yellow Green Farmers Market in Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mark Menagh.

The Yellow Green Farmers Market occupies a 100,000-square foot hanger style building previously an industrial site for the manufacture of sheet metal products.

The property was purchased by the owners of Invicta Watch Company whose international headquarters are right next door. As a very successful company they had a desire to outreach and bring to the community a location where it would be easy to create a business in the natural food, agriculture and health and sustainability. This initiative has brought to life a unique shopping experience by integrating green living and the incredible diversity of South Florida into the heart of daily life. Yellow Green is a true village market where each booth is a separate business. The market is a bounty of seasonal, fresh foods along with artisanal goods created by local chefs, artists and craftsmen.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
As a very large facility, the public doubt that we could be a farmers market and not another flea market kept our marketing strategy focused on word of mouth. It takes someone who has visited the market to truly describe what we are. As a Farmers Market, we are an accumulation of 280 separate businesses and as much as we would like to be able to describe our market as a whole we are truly a very diverse community.

Please tell us about Yellow Green Farmers Market.
We are a very large market with over 280 vendors each maintaining a space. We have grown to have over 120 different types of prepared food. From Ethiopian, Indonesian, Indian, Dutch, Thai, Venezuelan and other international specialties.

You can explore flavors by sampling all types of food including the tropical fruits that grow well in Florida. With many competitive produce booths, you compare the prices on your local vegetables from the local farm produce stands and imported fruits and vegetables.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
We would have loved to have more support from the City of Hollywood and the County of Broward. We are an entrepreneurial proving ground where many of our small businesses have grown and open stores in the community. But even without the County or City’s help we are now a business development center, an agricultural support center, a community health and wellness center, we can with the County’s help build a healthier, wealthier community.
