Meet Maria Mazzi of De Nada Empanada in Aventura

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria Mazzi.

Maria, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
De Nada empanada came from a longing for a type of healthy, whole grain cheese empanada/bread snack option similar to ones we have at home, in Bolivia. They may not be a typical Bolivian food but they are very easy to find. In fact, every bakery and bread maker provides a version of a whole wheat, baked, cheese-filled empanada. Since moving here to Miami two years ago, we realized that there was nothing close to it anywhere on the market. Finding anything similar proved impossible.

Over this past summer, my sister in law came to visit and she proudly brought us some of her own empanadas that she had just started making for her specialty baked goods shop back home. We were delighted! She eagerly suggested we try making them ourselves so that we could somehow start a little business. We worked together using her recipe as a starting point and came up with our De Nadas. One vegan and one with regular cheese. Taste tests proved positive and so it began. And here we are.

Has it been a smooth road?
It has been relatively smooth thus far. Social media has played a fundamental role in our growth. We are hardly three months old but we have been fulfilling orders steadily week by week and have managed to regularly provide an ayurvedic cafe and a coffee bar along with a continuous clientele around a yoga studio where I also teach and work a few days a week. I think that the main struggle is keeping sales in an upward slant.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with De Nada Empanada – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Our company is family-owned and operated. We are proud to be artisanal and able to control quality every step of the way. We pride ourselves in using all organic ingredients, no preservatives and one hundred percent made by hand. We bake from scratch in the same way that this company started from scratch. Handmade and homemade are what distinguishes from the rest. Healthy, nutritious, heart smart, vegan and non, specialty cheese-filled set us apart from the rest.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
What’s not to love about Miami? Being close to the beach has been a lifelong dream. Miami has grown so much, culinarily and culturally and there is always something to do. The traffic…not a fan.
