Meet Maria Magdalena Suska of Mercy Hospital in Coconut Grove

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria Magdalena Suska.

Maria, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Originally from Poland I studied Nursing at Columbia college in Chicago. I was interested in medicine all my life. After graduation I came back to Miami where currently I am a cardiac nurse at Mercy Hospital.

Has it been a smooth road?
Definitely has not been the smoothest road. A lot of late night studying, memorizing, and clinical work was the hardest but I knew at the end it would be worth it.

We’d love to hear more about your practice.
I specialize in Cardiac Nursing, so this means that I treat patients who suffer from conditions that affect their cardiovascular and pulmonary systems. Some of my duties are:
• Assists with diagnostic tests like electrocardiograms.
• Educates patients on ways to prevent heart disease.
• Educates family on how to help the patient engage in healthy behavior at home.
• Updates electronic medical records.
• Answers patient questions regarding nutrition and exercise.
• Helps patients with postoperative
rehabilitation.
• Handles emergency cardiovascular
episodes.

I usually have 3 sometimes 4 day 12 hr shifts every week, as well as a night shift.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Nursing is a profession where it will be always needed in our society.
