Today we’d like to introduce you to Manny Macedo.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Manny. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started working with wood in 2006, at first it was just a job to make some money while I was still in High School. In 2008 I quit my woodworking job and disliked woodworking to the point of giving away all my tools. I worked in many different industries and in 2012 I found myself in desperate need of a job forcing me to go back to woodworking. I worked for a big carpentry company and there I was exposed to different designs and woodworking techniques. The company I worked for was owned by my uncle so I started using the scrap pieces of wood on my spare time to build furniture pieces to friends and family. At this point I didn’t look at it as a business, it was more of a hobby and me trying to see what else I could come up with. As time passed by friends began introducing me to their friends and next thing I knew I had to choose in between my job which was a very solid career working for my uncle on track to take over his business once he was ready to retire or to go out and try on my own. I left my uncles company in December 2015 and haven’t worked a day since. I put in 14-16 hr. days every day in order to keep my business going but I wouldn’t have it any other way. I am very proud of how far I have come and I cannot wait for what is coming.
Has it been a smooth road?
I’ve always expected it to be rough but never thought it would be this wild. It has been very challenging couple of years having to create an entire blue print for the business without really having something to base it on. I have learned a lot, there is so much more to the business part of it than I anticipated. I have been blessed to have worked with very understanding people who have helped me get exposure. It’s a rollercoaster ride everyday and I love every minute of it.
So, let’s switch gears a bit and go into the MM Wood Designs story. Tell us more about the business. MM Wood Designs is a custom woodworking company that specializes in furniture. I take a very artistic approach to woodworking, often using unique pieces of wood making it impossible to be recreated. In 90% of my projects not even I know what the end product will look like and this is something that I cherish. I go through every step of design with my clients to make sure that all of their needs will be met in the most cost-effective way. I take pride in the quality and uniqueness of my work. My service is what sets me apart from others both when the client is happy and when we need to make adjustments to make sure that the client is happy at the end of our experience.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade? I see that people are slowly shifting and being more open to the type of work that I and others in the industry are doing. Wood allows artists so many different ways to express themselves and I think we are taking advantage of that. People are tired of the limited/boring selections of furniture stores and being more open to unique artistic work. I believe this industry will keep growing rapidly as it has been in the last few years.
