Meet Lucy Martinez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lucy Martinez.

Lucy, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Well, I started when I showed some interest in art back in ‘06. I took up a drawing class in college and I found out I had something. Throughout the years, I continued to practice drawing and painting. Eventually, I started attending small art shows, trying to sell paintings and other small art projects I thought would catch some attention. Eventually, my brother Pete who owns a tattoo shop, asked me if I’d like to learn to tattoo. I took up his offer. I apprenticed for about three years until I finally got my own station and bringing in my own clients because of the art I put out. Painting sparked my interest in art as a whole. It led me to tattooing. Although painting and tattooing are two completely different ball games. The challenge to transition was definitely an interesting one. Painting is still a huge part of my business as I take on commissions between appointments.

Has it been a smooth road?
My main struggle along the way has ultimately been myself. Being a dreamer and a deep thinker has pushed me back in many ways. But we must not allow even ourselves to get in the way of growing. So grow on I shall.

We’d love to hear more about your art.
Ultimately I’m an artist. My business is to create. I specialize in creating a custom piece of art permanently on skin. I’m a tattoo artist. I’m most proud of the fact that all of my clients feel comfortable in my chair and leave happy with a forever piece of art. What sets me apart is I don’t replicate any design. I want my clients to have unique pieces of art that no one else has. To turn a verbal idea into an actual visual piece is what really brings me the most joy.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Palm Beach County has a lot of tattoo shops. The competition is pretty high. If you’re starting to tattoo in South Florida, then you’d better be ready to find new ways to stick out from the rest.
