Today we’d like to introduce you to Luca De Massis.
Luca, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Born in Italy in a small town called Pescara about two hours from Rome, I always had the passion for beautiful arts started playing music at a very young age and I was always interested in film photography and the fashion industry. I started traveling at a very young age all over Europe and got to learn a lot from different cultures and meet interesting talented people. Growing up in a mid-class family wasn’t easy I had to step up and take over the role to start helping my family and make ends meet. I remember at age 15 taking photos with old cameras, polaroids and always try to capture cool moments even if it was only a random birthday party or a family portrait shoot. At age 19 decided to take my first trip to the United States and went to New York for a vacation and to look for opportunities to display my work in a different country, I ended up staying for a few weeks and then had to go back to my motherland because I didn’t have a Visa or enough money to afford the stay in the Big Apple.
After going back to Italy I felt like I was missing something and always had the American Dream as a big-picture stuck in my head, I told my self I need go back get hired get a visa and work to save money up so I can make my dream come true, So I came back with really little money and not knowing the language and started doing some 9-5 here and there to be able to afford a roof over my head and to get my foot in the door by doing shoots here and there when I had a day off. Lot’s of doors closed in my face, I felt like giving up, nothing was working my way I was stressed out and everything but inside me I had this fire and love that kept me going I was pushing harder every day and started to book more shoots, get in touch with more people in the industry through social media and little by little all the hard work started to pay off.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road at the beginning was very bumpy… Like I explained previously the most challenge was the language barrier, not knowing anyone, not having financial stability and feeling lonely away from your family/friends and your own home.
Tell us more about the business.
I’m a professional photographer that also specializes in Fashion Film/Beauty Portraits/Weddings/ very versatile when it comes to arts as I mentioned before. I am in love with fashion! I love capturing beautiful moments and paint a picture with it. I have several skills editing and adding that final touch that makes the audience go wow. Nowadays everyone copies and paste the next person. Talent can’t be taught but it can be awakened. Practice makes perfect. Believe in your dreams they were given to you for a reason don’t just do it for the money LOVE WHAT YOU DO!
What does it take to succeed? What are the secrets of the most successful people?
I have spent my entire career studying the psychological characteristics that predict achievement and creativity. While I have found that a certain number of traits including passion, perseverance, imagination, intellectual curiosity, and openness to experience do significantly explain differences in success, I am often intrigued by just how much of the variance is often left unexplained. Luck is not everything talent matters.
