Today we’d like to introduce you to Leah Mendez.
Leah, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I am a painter currently attending New World School of the Arts in Downtown Miami. I have always known I was going to be an artist. So I started to make many paintings and ended up selling many of them. Which led to people commissioning paintings. To help the cost of materials of oil paints and canvases, I started a wearable Art shop that I run through Instagram. Its handle is @artist.bydesign.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has not been a smooth ride. Being an Artist comes with little stability and a lot of struggle. I am constantly reminded of this by many people. There are many learning curves when it comes to making things and learning how to appeal to people. There are also many mental struggles when I take on a lot of things at one time or take on a challenge, for example taking many commissions in one month and having a deadline that is much too short for the painting requested.
Please tell us more about your art.
I have a small business I run myself that of selling paintings and making wearable art. I specialize in painting canvases, typically I paint faces however I have recently started painting more landscapes. I am known for painting on clothes and oil paintings. As a small business that just recently started, I am most proud of what I have been able to accomplish in the past year. My skills have grown immensely since I began to paint, I never imagined that so many people would ask me for paintings or buy the clothes I paint. What sets me apart from others is my drive, I strive to do and accomplish many things and I will continue to work as hard as I can to achieve them. What sets my art apart is the connection I try to make with people through it. When viewers look at my work, I want it to evoke a feeling and be able to connect with the piece on a more personal level.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love the beauty, diversity and opportunities this city has to offer. What I like least about the city is probably traffic.
