Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Schill
Hi Laura, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
A little over a year ago, I made the big move from The Netherlands to the United States. I had previously worked as a physician’s assistant in a large practice with five doctors back home, so I was accustomed to the healthcare environment. However, when my husband, who is an American and has lived in Florida since 1994, and I decided we were to settle in Boca Raton, I was faced with a completely new and unfamiliar healthcare system. As someone who had little knowledge of the American healthcare system, I was initially terrified.
But after diving in and learning about how the system works, I discovered it wasn’t as daunting as I had expected. This experience led me to a realization: I wanted to educate others in the same way I wish I had been educated. Instead of returning to school to renew my medical credentials, I decided to pivot and became a licensed health insurance agent. I created Sunset Secured Insurance and made it my mission to help my community understand their healthcare options.
My company, Sunset Secured Insurance, specializes in Medicare education, hosting free educational Medicare 101 seminars for individuals approaching the age of 65, and I assist those already on Medicare in evaluating their coverage to ensure it meets their needs. I also focus on dental insurance, as I’ve found that many people avoid seeing the dentist out of fear of high bills. A lot of young adults need to get off their parent’s dental insurance when they turn 26 and go without regular check-up’s for years.
Next to being a mom of two teenagers and a wife, having my own insurance company has been incredibly fulfilling. I truly feel like I’ve found my calling, and I’m so glad I took this leap. It’s been a rewarding journey helping people navigate a complex system and make more informed healthcare choices.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, starting my own company in a new country definitely hasn’t been easy. Between being a mom with school drop-offs, soccer games, and all the other responsibilities, I had to get licensed and adjust to working long days. On top of that, reaching out to people who need my help wasn’t easy either. The turning 65 community is constantly bombarded with phone calls and ads about Medicare—and they definitely don’t want to hear from another agent trying to reach them. That’s why it’s so important to get involved in the community and build a reputation, so they know I’m the person they can trust with their questions. I know it takes time, and it’s a lot, but I’m pushing through!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Sunset Secured Insurance?
After working as a physician’s assistant, I witnessed firsthand the daily struggles many families face due to inadequate insurance coverage. It was eye-opening to see how these issues impacted not just patients, but also their families, creating stress and uncertainty. This experience sparked my passion for advocating better healthcare access. I truly believe that everyone deserves the peace of mind that comes with comprehensive health insurance, so families can focus on what truly matters: their health and well-being.
Our mission at Sunset Secured Insurance is simple: To Educate, To Guide, and To Support Floridians navigating similar challenges while raising awareness in our community. By hosting free Medicare 101 seminars I break down the basics in a way everyone can understand. I’m always looking for local businesses to host these educational seminars, as I’ve found that people in settings like waiting rooms of doctors offices, diners, salons or gyms are often open to learning more about their health. Whether we do a Medicare 101 for 45 minutes or a quick chat where we discuss your dental insurance options, my services are always free and without obligation. The only thing I ask back in return of my time is for you to spread the word. Tell friends, family members and neighbors that I can help them understand that insurance is not scary or difficult.
I strongly believe in a customer-focused approach that prioritizes honesty and integrity. You can trust that you’ll receive the best advice and support tailored to your needs. My Dutch straightforward approach means clear communication and a no-nonsense service. Above all, I strive to build lasting relationships based on trust and transparency.
Any big plans?
Looking ahead, I plan to expand my efforts in educating and empowering more Floridians, especially as Medicare becomes increasingly important for aging populations and young people are very busy with life. They don’t have the time to shop around for dental insurance. The goal is to host more seminars across different communities, reaching people who may not have had access to this crucial information before. I also aim to partner with more businesses and organizations that share my commitment to improving healthcare access, creating opportunities for more people to get informed in convenient and comfortable settings.
