Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyle O’Brien.
Kyle, before we jump into specific questions about your company, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
As a kid, I used to make videos on iMovie with my friends in the neighborhood. Eventually, that led to signing up for a class near Clearwater Beach, which let us rent out cameras from the local TV channel. I remember how cool I felt when I was able to film with one of these. The station had editing bays that had Adobe Premiere installed on them and we could also rent those out. Little did I know, ten years later, Adobe Premiere would be an industry standard for editing.
Fast forward about five years and I was going to college. I went to Full Sail in Orlando to learn sound. At the time, I wanted to learn music because I was in a band in high school. The thing is, the audio was pretty complicated it seemed. I remember very clearly sitting in the classroom thinking “man if I want to become as good as I need to be at something to be considered a professional, I’m gonna have to spend a LOT of time studying and practicing the craft.” Since I already had a love for playing with cameras, I decided that day that I would continue to develop that skill and focus on one thing. So I finished school and graduated with a Bachelor’s in Recording Arts, but every night I was practicing video editing after class.
Once I was done with school I got a job as a full time video editor in St. Petersburg, FL and worked at that job for about a year. That job was amazing because it lets me travel all over the country and even internationally for events that I would edit videos to be played at the conferences. At one of these events, I met a guy named Oscar Perez.
Oscar was at this event filming as a freelancer for an attendee of the event. After talking for a bit we realized that both of us lived near each other back home so we decided to meet up and hang out once we got back to the Clearwater area. At the time, I was filming a LOT of local rap music videos for artists around the Tampa Bay and St. Pete area. I asked Oscar to help me with some of these jobs and after working together on these, we eventually decided to partner up and create the video production company we now own called Motion Minds.
Motion Minds is a full service video production company with an office in Safety Harbor, FL which is located in Clearwater, FL. At Motion Minds, we work on all types of professional videography work from corporate videos, to brand content videos, to event videos, and even high end TV commercials, mainstream music videos, aerial drone videos and narrative film work. Video is our passion and making films for brands is our specialty.
Through Motion Minds, we have been able to work on 12 music videos for Atlanta rapper B.o.B, we’ve traveled all over the world filming content for different corporate companies, and have been able to see our work displayed on all platforms. It’s been quite an incredible ride.
After running Motion Minds for a few years, we were contacted by a super talented young video editor in the Clearwater area named Chase Yandek. We talked about it for a day or two and quickly decided that we needed to hire him and make him a part of our team! Since having Chase, and working hard on updating all of our work, we are gearing up to completely update our brand.
We are releasing an updated Motion Minds website which has our best work to date. We will continue to update that week by week and also we will be posting blogs on it frequently for fresh content! Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It hasn’t always been smooth. We struggled for a long time to have a consistent business, but now after five years, we are finally started to see a lot of success.
Tell us about your company. What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of as a company? What sets you apart from others?
Motion Minds is a full service video production company that specializes in videography for corporate companies and high end commercial TV spots. We don’t stop there though, we also create mainstream music videos, we film event videos, branded content videos, real estate videos, aerial videos, and offer high end photography services. Motion Minds’ office is located in Clearwater, FL but we travel all over the Tampa Bay and St. Pete area as well as all over the country and internationally for work. We are known for our attention to quality and style. As a company, we are most proud of our team. What sets us apart from the others, is that we care. We care about making the highest quality video we can for every client regardless of any circumstances. We care about every part of everything we do for our clients and we know it shows.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I had a friend growing up named Ryan Cook that inspired me a lot. He would write stories that we would film and I think he played a big role in me wanted to do what I do today. I also had a teacher named Carl Zimmermann. Carl took us on a field trip to Sundance in high school and he was also a huge part of my life as well. My Dad was always a major supporter for me and has continued to help me do what I do. He has given me the best advice for success and I have to thank him for that.
