Today we’d like to introduce you to Kylan Chetty.
Kylan, before we jump into specific questions about your work, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
When I was very young I saw my Dad playing his guitar and I was just in awe of its beauty; I also really loved my Dad so much and always wanted to do what he did. So, I asked him to teach me and he saw that I really enjoyed it and that I was a natural too so he decided to buy me a guitar for my 11th birthday. I remember him teaching me two very easy songs and I learned them so fast to everyone’s surprise. I taught myself more and more and then started to venture into other instruments by about 15. I learned to play the piano, bass guitar and harmonica all by myself.
I never really thought I would make a career out of music but in the last few years, I’ve been told that I shouldn’t waste my God-given talent. So, I decided to try make my own music and began to put myself out there, performing at a few places and opening up for a big Artist in South Africa called “Mi Casa”. I also released multiple singles (which has been pleasantly received by many people) and my newest single, “Thinking About You” set to be released on the 16th of January 2020!
Unfortunately, the kind of music I love doing is not that largely sought after in my home country, South Africa, so I dreamed of coming to the US but was never sure how I would accomplish that dream because it was extremely expensive. The universe, however, had other ideas and presented me with the opportunity to come and study here on a tennis scholarship. So, I decided to take it and see what happens.
It was actually my first time on an aero plane, let alone outside of South Africa, so I was extremely scared and didn’t have any idea what to expect. After 21 hours of flying, I finally arrived here and I immediately began looking for opportunity. Opportunity seemed to find me, however; I was given a chance to open for a small band called “No Traffik”. At the performance, I met a few other people that asked me to perform at their bars. I also signed with Dry n Wet Talent Agency which gave me opportunities to perform at the Village at Gulfstream Park on a few occasions.
I always had this dream to perform on America’s Got Talent because it’s such a cool show but it was only a dream because as I previously mentioned I never knew how I’d get to the U.S. But I am here and I certainly did audition to be on the show. I will know around February/March if I made it onto the show so, wish me luck!
I’m Kylan Chetty, a 21-year-old young man with big dreams and goals, and yeah that’s my story…
Has it been a smooth road?
As I mentioned, I had to come from very far. And it was extremely expensive so there was no chance I could come here but by a miracle, I received a tennis scholarship to Florida National University and took it.
It also could not have come at a better time because I felt lost. I wasn’t sure what I was going to do with my life and that put me into a bit of a depression. But I had some life coaching and time to figure things out and managed to work myself through a difficult situation.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
There are a few things that I personally think sets me apart from other people.
The first is that I am a naturally positive person and I always manage to see the good part of things. Whether it be in people or situations. I also believe that everyone deserves kindness, even if they are unkind. Because nobody is unkind for no reason, they have just been hurt.
The second is that I’ve always had this mindset that I can do ANYTHING I put my mind to. And it is a mindset that is easier said than done. I never give up on anything and that mindset has allowed me to succeed in anything and everything I’ve tried.
The third is that I’m a very fast learner and that is because I try my best to understand rather than just blindly remember. Lastly, I am always happy. Many people are sad because they do not realize how blessed they actually are in their lives. I do my best to not get caught up in all the craziness and so I always have a smile on my face. I love learning, and I’m always learning no matter where I am or what I’m doing so that just allows me to have a permanent smile. (Which is also something I’ve had my whole life)
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Yes, I would really recommend they start out here. It’s presented me with numerous opportunities that I will forever be grateful. I just wish the public transport system was better!!
