Today we’d like to introduce you to Kieron Williams.
Kieron, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve been writing stories since elementary school. I was inspired by cartoons and TV shows I would watch, and I wanted to create a world that all of my friends could be a part of. So, I would write new versions of stories, and tell them to my friends and family, and through that, I found a love that’s still unmatched by anything else. That love has grown throughout the years, and I have continued to be inspired by all of the writers and artists around me in Miami.
Over time, I’ve found that my true calling is to bring great art to life through stories. I am constantly inspired by random doodles, original characters, concepts, and the like from various artists I follow on social media, and it’s inspired me to create my best work.
My next goal is to move from short stories to comic books (the first of which I hope to have available by the end of this year) and then to continue to do visual storytelling for the rest of my life.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s certainly not been a smooth road. The real struggle for me has been fighting against the social conditioning I’ve been taught as a student: to follow the rules, to be afraid of failure, to accept that there is only one right way to do things… these ideas are toxic to the soul of a writer or any other kind of artist, but I still fall prey to their traps pretty often.
I’m the kind of person that can change perspectives on a subject pretty quickly, so it’s been hard for me to hold on to certain ideals and stick to them. This can make it really hard to stay disciplined and to face fears, even when I know that there’s nothing to be afraid of.
Little wins are what usually gets me through the more turbulent times: getting accepted into grad school for creative writing, getting some short stories published, or finishing outlines for new projects. Those things build my confidence and help me feel like I’m on the right track.
Tell us about your work. What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of? What sets you apart from others?
I specialize in telling original concept fantasy and sci-fi stories that blend cultures together. Rather than borrow story concepts from the typical places like Lord of the Rings or Blade Runner, I enjoy taking pieces of the real world and transforming them in new ways.
I’m most proud of two short stories I’ve written recently: one is called The Royces, and the other is called That Time I Met the Boogeyman. Both of them are available on my website, under Works.
When you look back, what are you most proud of?
The proudest moment for me so far has been getting a short comedy skit accepted into the Miami Short Film Festival, and getting to watch the audience react from the back of the theatre. Watching them dance to the music, laugh at all the right times, and getting a standing ovation at the end was an incredible feeling.
