Meet Kevin Garrison of Garrison’s Prosthetic Services in North Miami Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Garrison.

Kevin S, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started my Corporation back in January 1986 within the beautiful city of North Miami Beach. To get my prosthetic practice started my father and grandfather provided financial loans. Due to the fact that I had previously lectured to our state prosthetic organization, I was able to secure credit lines with prosthetic manufacturers very interested in helping me get established.

I had been working for other prosthetic facilities for 10 years learning all I could about proper prosthetic care for our amputee patients. My dream was to own and operate my own prosthetics facility at some time in my life, and I wanted my prosthetic facility to be managed in the most professional manner. Whether my patients were young or old, a new amputee or someone who has been an amputee for many years, I wanted to treat them in the most holistic manner as an individual– not just as someone with a disability.

Becoming an amputee myself as a teenager, I was provided artificial limbs that were not comfortable and causing me great sadness as I tried to get back into my life. The pursuit of a comfortable and proper fitting prosthesis led me to finding and education pathway allowing me to learn how to make artificial limbs. I was fortunate to be able to attend both UCLA and Northwestern University successfully completing my formal prosthetic education.

I developed great experience through the years making it possible for me to deal with any challenge, designing, fabricating and fitting any upper or lower extremity prosthesis on- site with the latest innovations and extraordinary attention to detail. Being part of the North Miami Beach healthcare community for over 30 years, is a testament to my love for the prosthetic profession as I continue successfully caring for upper and lower extremity amputees.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Challenges have been coping with the decreasing fee schedules for our profession, and finding long term employees that fill all the requirements necessary maintaining our high professional standards.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I feel my success as a licensed and certified prosthetist relates to doing work that comes from my heart. I personally know what it’s like to go through a day with a very uncomfortable prosthesis, incorrectly made causing various levels of pain and a lack of confidence while walking.

I have learned to take my time with my patients, studying their needs and desires with regard to getting them back into their lives staying as independent and as active as possible. If problems develop as they sometimes do, they are taken care of immediately, enabling me to maintain very high levels of trust with my patients.

I have artistic ability and pay great attention to detail. This enables me in providing devices where perception and reality collide, revealing the most beautifully finished prosthetic work for my patients.

To further help my patients I decided to write a book assisting them with the psychological effects of limb amputation. The book is called: It’s Just a Matter of Balance-You Can’t Put a Straight Leg on a Crooked Man. The book is listed as recommended reading by the American Academy of Orthotists & Prosthetists.
