Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Mejia.
Kevin, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
When I was 20 years old, I studied psychology at Southeastern University and worked towards my degree in Industrial Psychology. Through my Freshman and Sophomore years, I read over 13 books. Included in that list were, “Rich Dad, Poor Dad”, “Think & Grow Rich,” ” As a Man Thinketh,” ” The Psychology of Winning,”, and many other Audio Books. Until one day I read Gary Keller’s, ” The Millionaire Real Estate Agent.”
That book put a fire within me to get my real estate license. My goal since I was young was to be financially free. When I read, “The Millionaire Real Estate Agent,” or MREA for short, I saw for the first time in my life, a path to Freedom. I got my Real Estate license in Louisiana and worked for one of the most successful real estate firms in the State. They were selling over 150+ homes per year. I worked under their wings for about 7 months and that’s when I decided to open my real estate team.
I quit my job at the Real Estate Firm, got a job selling cars to build capital and in about 6 months I had over $30,000 saved up. That was when I sold all my belongings, hopped in a car, and moved to Fort Lauderdale, FL. I told myself that I would either sink or swim. I did not have any family or friends in Florida. I moved here to build a future, or at least as far as $30,000 would get me. After 6 months of Cold Calling, I was getting nowhere. I had a big database of leads but I had difficulty attaining clients. Until I realized I needed a Coach.
Once I got a Mentor, I started closing Contracts and within 3 months I had Sold over 9 homes. Within 12 months I sold 18 homes. One year later, I sold over 35 homes. Now, I sell over 50 homes per year and have 4 people in my team selling Real Estate. I invest in Rental Properties and found that my true path to freedom is by helping others and building long-lasting residual income. All this occurred within a timeframe of just 5 years.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Nothing worth building is smooth. I’ve had people join my team, learn what they can about real estate, and then leave. I’ve had agents try to steal my clients and deals behind my back.
I’ve lost great relationships and mentors during COVID due to financial disagreements. I’ve bought rental properties that were sold to me with tons of issues in them.
I’ve had deals Cancelled, I’ve had months where no closings occurred but everyone still had to get paid. All the ups and downs of running a people business in a sales-driven industry.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Our Real Estate Team of 4 individuals has sold over 200 homes in just a matter of 3 years. Most real estate agents leave the industry after 12 months of joining. We help buyers and sellers achieve their real estate goals. What sets me apart from the rest of my competitors is that I am bilingual, young, and hungry.
Being able to speak 2 languages allows me to tap into multiple markets that my competitors can’t. I also can work 12+ hour days and connect with as many people in our market as possible. Most Agents do Real estate part-time, on average working with only 3-4 clients per year.
Our team works with 3-4 clients per month. That allows me to gain more market share in different neighborhoods throughout of Palm Beach, Dade, and Broward County.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Yes, real estate is one of the most bulletproof industries to be in. Our industry thrived during COVID. Fewer people were doing transactions, but the ones that were doing transactions only worked with Agents who were there for them during COVID times and kept them updated on the market.
Most agents dropped out of the industry during COVID because of how difficult it became to find deals. However, I worked twice as hard by staying in touch with twice the amount of people I usually stay in touch with, and in that consistency, clients looked for me during those times.
