Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla Bramlett.
Kayla, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was studying my double major in Speech Pathology and Audiology as well as Child Learning and Development at the University of Texas at Dallas when I picked up one of my close friends’ cameras on an impromptu road trip. I was shooting random things and posting them to Instagram when people started asking me to film for them. After a little while, my now business partner, and I started to shoot bigger and bigger projects. Thus, Nectar List was created. Today we create and produce everything from resort marketing materials, e-commerce, corporate films, travel and luxury content, and swimwear and clothing brands.
It was when we were shooting for a hotel in the Caribbean that I began my love affair with Miami. We had to fly through there frequently for work and the more I came the more in love I fell. I had danced professionally in Dallas for a few years at that point and my end goal was always to make it as an NFL cheerleader. I knew the Dolphins were my team, that’s when I bought a one-way ticket and auditioned for the squad… flash forward to today, almost three years later and in addition to continuously growing as an entrepreneur. I am cheering on the sidelines every Sunday at Hard Rock Stadium.
If all of that wasn’t enough, last year I decided to start yet another small business. An online apparel boutique, Isla and Fox. Beginning another business from scratch has been challenging but such a different atmosphere than media production. It’s yet another outlet for me to expend my seemingly never-ending amount of energy and thirst for new endeavors. I feel so lucky that this is my life. I couldn’t have imagined when I was young. This would be what I’m doing. It’s so crazy how what’s meant to be truly does just happen.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
While I wouldn’t change my experiences for anything, it hasn’t always been easy. There have been countless sleepless nights of work all to wake up practice choreography and rush to practice. From practice getting home around 11:30 pm and jumping back on the computer to edit for x amount of hours to finish projects or to create marketing content. There have been moments where I questioned if I had chosen the right path, where I wondered if being an Entrepreneur was really the right decision. Moments where it was hard to pull myself out of the anxiety of finding new clients or being able to finish a project in time. Even moments where I felt I wasn’t being taken seriously as a businesswoman where I felt defeated and silly for trying to do so much. In the end though, it’s all been worth it. I feel so lucky to have struggled to get to where I am now and I know that I only have more goals to achieve in the future.
Please tell us about Nectar List Media & Isla and Fox.
Nectar List is a full-service digital media and production agency. We specialize primarily in photography and cinematography but do everything from web and graphic design, logo creation, marketing and brand consulting.. anything that you can create by clicking a button on a camera or laptop.. we can probably do it. I’m most proud of our ability to connect with the audience. For each client, we tailor their specific needs and wants and try to get it as close to perfect as we can. I feel we’re different because of our easy-going nature as people, making us easy to work with and express desires to while balancing that with meticulous attention to detail and strive for perfection in our work. We genuinely love what we do and I think it shows when clients meet us and I feel it creates a truly positive environment to create content that everyone loves.
As far as Isla and Fox goes, it is an online apparel boutique where I curate pieces that I feel are easy to wear and easy to travel with but don’t sacrifice quality. The boutique came to be because I found I was having to get rid of so many pieces of clothing due to them being cheaply made or didn’t “feel” great to wear. I pick out pieces that I personally would feel good wearing and that I know are incredible. I am most proud of my ability to do a lot with a little. I have very limited stock and limited available items because I would rather start smaller and know everything is on par with my expectations than have a large amount and only 1/3 be pristine. I want to grow my brand with loyal customers who know that when they order, it’s going to be exactly right. I feel my boutique is different from others because it has me. I genuinely care about what my consumer actually wants to buy. I read every DM, respond to every question, and take into account what’s being requested before finding items for each new launch.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Hmm, growing up in a small town in Texas, I think my favorite memories are climbing trees and reading for hours. My mom even took a power drill and screwed a cup holder in one of my favorite trees so that I could have a drink with me while I read.
