Meet KaJanee’ Smith of Pulse Dance Troupe in Boca Raton

Today we’d like to introduce you to KaJanee’ Smith.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I began dancing when I was eight years of age. I have been dancing for nearly fifteen years now. My dance technique includes ballet, modern, jazz, contemporary, lyrical, pointe and hip hop. My oldest sister attended Florida Atlantic University while I was in high school. She informed me about Pulse Dance Troupe, which is a dance organization on Florida Atlantic University’s Boca Raton campus. I met the founder of Pulse Dance Troupe, Akeem Edwards, while I was completing my senior year of high school. I told him that I was interested in joining Pulse. I auditioned for Pulse Dance Troupe, or PDT, during my first fall semester as a freshman and I made the team. After my first year being a dancer on PDT, I wanted to be apart of the Executive Board for PDT. I tried to become the President; instead, I became the Vice President to gain some of the experience of what the Executive Board does. During my junior year of college, I became the President of PDT and I withheld this position throughout my senior year.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
In general, there aren’t any experiences that are “smooth”; thus, being the President of PDT has not been a “smooth road”. One of the challenges I have personally faced is pleasing the entire executive board, the dancers and myself. Sometimes, there are decisions that are made that I do not agree with or that the members of the Executive Board does not agree with. I have learned that decision making should not be about pleasing everyone; the best decisions are what benefits the team.

Pulse Dance Troupe – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am a dancer and choreographer on PDT and the President of PDT. As a dancer and choreographer, I make up routines and I perform. As the President of PDT, I collaborate with members of the Executive Board and the dancers, I make and meet deadlines, I give out tasks and deadlines for the other members of the Executive Board to meet, I meet with and make decisions with hierarchical organizations, such as Student Government, I collaborate with other organizations and more. As President, I mainly complete the “background of things”. I am known for being a dancer. I love dancing. I dance every where, even public places like a grocery store. There are dance videos and pictures all over my social media accounts. I just love dancing. I am most proud of the members of PDT and how we work together to keep PDT a positive image in the eyes of everyone else.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I define success as finally reaching a goal, rather it be short term or long term, that has had failures upon reaching it. The road to success isn’t success without failures.
