Today we’d like to introduce you to Juliana Salgado
Hi Juliana, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started as a teenager, doing my friends’ hair, nails, and makeup—something I simply loved to do. After high school, I couldn’t go to college, so I began working in restaurants. Meeting my husband and experiencing a miscarriage became a turning point for me; I decided it was time to be an adult and go to school so I could provide for my future children. Right after graduation, I found out I was pregnant again. Because of my previous loss, I was mentally terrified of going through that pain once more. It wasn’t until 2018, when my daughter was two, that I was finally able to seek professional help for postpartum anxiety and begin to reclaim my life as a mom.
After being in the salon space for about seven months, I noticed that many people in my chair were dealing with anxiety or depression. Often, changing something about their hair was the only thing that made them feel better. I also saw that while clients frequently asked for the latest hair trends, very few were concerned about the actual health of their hair—or even their own well-being. I realized they were masking emotions, much like I had been. I felt frustrated, as I didn’t know how to help these women. I questioned myself, even wondering if I should go to school to become a psychologist instead.
That’s when the idea for *Beauty Beyond Beauty* was born, although it felt like a distant dream. Then life took an unexpected turn, and I found myself back in Colombia during the pandemic. All I could do at that time was focus on my mental health, both for myself and for my child. It was then that I truly appreciated that our experience of life is a choice—no matter the circumstances, we have the power to create beauty or despair in our own minds.
When I returned to the U.S., I no longer wanted to work in a typical salon. I wanted to create a different experience—one that could help people feel the same peace I had found, despite life’s imperfections. I became drawn to sound healing and practices that brought a deep sense of ease to my soul. *Beauty Beyond Beauty* started to come to life as a mobile stylist service, where I combined natural hair treatments with sound baths. However, I soon realized that, while their hair was healthier, clients were still stressed and not fully able to enjoy their self-care time in a mobile setting. I also found myself juggling two additional jobs to make ends meet, which wasn’t sustainable.
In January 2024, I knew I needed to make a real change. I decided to open a salon suite where I could provide a sanctuary for my clients. I wanted to create a safe space where my “Beausties” could truly relax, connect with their inner wisdom, and find the answers they were seeking within themselves—a healing space for both their hair and their soul.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s definitely been a smooth road in terms of the gratification I feel when helping someone leave with a renewed sense of self. However, the financial side of starting my own business has been the challenging part—especially since I began on my own with just $400. Leaving my kids for long periods while I’m at work has definitely been the greatest challenge and biggest sacrifice.
