Today we’d like to introduce you to Judith Ackerman.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Everyone has a story. That is what makes each and every one unique. We all have talents, and sometimes they reveal themselves naturally and sometimes through a chain of difficult events. I had an artistic nature as a child, but like most people, their talents get pushed aside by everyday life until an unexpected situation arises and creates an opportunity for those talents to be revealed.
My unexpected situation came about after an eighteen year, successful career in Real Estate ended, due to an illness called Lupus. I was unable to work, and every situation in my life changed. I was depressed and isolated, and because of that, I began to paint and started to write stories for children’s books. I have won awards for my art, and I have just published my first book, “The Fishermen and the Mermaids” by Judith M. Ackerman
I designed and created this book to honor my father, who rescued my two brothers and me and adopted us.The story is about the mystical mermaids and the dangerous adventures the fishermen experience, leading a person to ask himself, ” Do You Believe In Mermaids?” Producing this book was such a challenge for me an I just won a reward. A 5-star review from “Readers Favorite”!
I am so excited!
Please tell us about your art.
I am a watercolorist, but I have tried other mediums and different styles, trying to find my niche!
The most important thing I have learned is to “PAINT WHAT YOU LOVE!” When you have an emotional connection to your subject, it always turns out better!
Don’t get discouraged if you cannot create a masterpiece or win awards or become the # 1 artist! Remember this, it is the #2 pencil that people prefer and buy!!! You do not have to be # 1!
My artwork and writing have saved me. It has given me a purpose again and a feeling of accomplishment. There is something very special about creating something! It may not turn out to be a masterpiece, but it gives you a sense of “self-worth” and joy. Your creations are a part of you, and it reveals to the world, Who You Are!
What You Feel! You are giving and leaving a piece of you for all eternity. Your creations will encourage and inspire others to express themselves and offer a part of themselves to the world.
We are each valuable and unique human beings and have so much to offer!
SO, BEGIN CREATING!!! SHOW THE WORLD WHO YOU ARE!!!
What do you think about the conditions for artists today? Has life become easier or harder for artists in recent years? What can cities like ours do to encourage and help art and artists thrive?
You would think the conditions for artists would have become easier with all of the social media available, and it has opened many doors! But I find in many environments. The arts are considered, not that important, especially in our schools. The schools today have cut back on the fine arts and the exposure to culture from our children. They are more concerned with sports programs. Many cities, such as Plantation have no cultural centers and therefore their citizens and more importantly, their future generation of children, are growing up without the appreciation for the finer things in life. It is very sad that cities and schools are not developing the creativity and expression of the artist soul because it is creativity that has made our world a better place!
All cities need cultural centers!
Miami is unique! There is a wealth of creativity and diversification! It encourages all aspects of the artful mind, body, and soul with their cultural centers, theaters, fairs, galleries, studios concert halls, schools!
I hope other cities take note of the excitement and contributions cities like Miami contribute to not only this generation but the generations coming up!
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
When I was a realtor, I wanted to create a more beautiful environment for the older neighborhoods of the city. I designed, and I raised the money to build beautiful entry walls, pillars, and bridges, by selling engraved bricks with the resident’s names on them. You can see my creations when you drive down Broward Boulevard in the City of Plantation, Fl.
I am a member of Gold Coast Watercolor Society and also a member of Plantation Art Guild, and I show my art at Juried Art Shows throughout the county.
