Meet Joseph Lee of Joseph Lee Counseling.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joseph Lee

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My journey begins honestly in childhood. Without going into too much detail, I had my own experiences with mental health along with my own fascination with psychology. The profound impact therapy had on my personal journey along with my genuine interest in learning more about the human mind led to me seeking an advanced degree in psychotherapy.

After completing my degree, I spent three years sharpening my skills and completing the requirements for licensure. My goal had always been to be an entrepreneur in private practice, but I found making the transition scary and I was tentative. Using all my social support and lessons learned along my journey, I was able to make the leap of faith. I am incredibly grateful and proud of that decision.

The four years since have been beautiful, challenging and most importantly, incredibly rewarding. I have had the opportunity to genuinely help change the lives of hundreds of clients and watch my business expand well beyond what I could have ever imagined.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been incredibly bumpy on the outside or on paper. In fact, on paper my business grew quite rapidly and I was able to hire another therapist after two years. The “bumps” were almost entirely internal, mentally and emotionally. I believe everyone on some level struggles with the unknown of the future. Entrepreneurship may just exacerbate this fear. No matter how full my caseload has been, the question of whether my business would continue to be successful tomorrow and thereafter created anxiety and worry.

The wonderful part of this experience is that it has taught me the value of mindfulness and focus. I have learned how to be fully focused and committed to the task at hand. Whether that be the client that sits in front of me, any business development/marketing task or even in my personal life. I have come to learn that no matter what line of business you are in, the real skill is learning how to be fully present while remaining mindful of long-term goals.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am licensed psychotherapist and transformational life coach. I provide services that assist anyone in improving their thoughts, beliefs, emotions and behaviors/decisions. These four categories are ultimately what comprise and form our lives. By learning how to create change in these areas, I ultimately help people to create legitimate change, potentially transformational change, to their lives.

I have always held stedfast in not “over specializing” as I enjoy and am effective in working with all genders, ages, races, religions and sexualities. I have found that with my age, experience and expertise, I am especially helpful to teenagers and their families. From a branding standpoint, I am proud of my balance of professionalism with authenticity. Many of my clients complain about their prior experiences with therapy as they felt it was somewhat superficial or ineffective. In my office, there is zero superficiality. I maintain healthy boundaries, but I am not afraid to connect on a deep level and have everything on the table. I believe this allows people to bypass years of denial and directly address whatever may be getting blocking them from being the happiest, most successful version of themselves.

Lastly, I have proudly partnered and built an in-network insurance based practice that offers both medication management and therapy. As my business has become more successful, I stepped away from insurance and only accept cash. However, I have a deep sense of responsibility to my community and I believe that having access to affordable and effective mental health services is paramount to the well-being of any community.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
Simply put; connection is vital. I believe Covid-19 showed the world the destructive power of isolation. It is through connected to family, friends and community that human beings thrive. We are not meant to live in isolation. Digital connection is certainly an advancement, but nothing can replace human to human connection in-person.
