Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonathan Baker.
Hi Jonathan, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I completed my master’s degree in psychology in 2014 and spent a considerable amount of time searching for employment within the field. I quickly realized how challenging it could be to secure psychology-related work with only a master’s degree.
In 2015, I interviewed for a psychometrician position within a private practice. Although they ultimately did not feel I was the right fit for their organization, they connected me with a company that provides psychological and vocational evaluation services to the Florida Department of Education’s Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR). That opportunity marked the true beginning of my career.
At the time, I had never heard of DVR or vocational evaluation, so I had to train and learn the discipline from the ground up. Over time, I developed a deep passion for the art and science behind vocational evaluation and was able to cultivate it into both a niche specialty and a long-term career path.
To further expand my expertise, I returned to graduate school and completed a year-long, post-master’s program in vocational evaluation from 2017 to 2018. I later pursued multiple professional certifications and went on to earn a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 2022. I am currently in the process of obtaining my Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC) credential, widely regarded as the gold standard within the rehabilitation field.
Today, I continue providing vocational evaluation services for DVR through the Center for Precious Minds, a role I have maintained since 2015. In addition, I operate my own company, through which I provide private evaluations and related professional services.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
For the most part, it has been a smooth road. Vocational evaluation is not a widely known field, and there is relatively limited competition within the space. I have also noticed that many practicing professionals are later in their careers, which suggests there will be meaningful opportunities for growth and new leadership within the field over the next decade.
The greatest challenge I have faced has been navigating the unpredictability that can accompany governmental changes and broader economic fluctuations. Because DVR is federally funded, shifts in funding can directly impact client referrals and overall business volume. Factors such as government shutdowns, budget cutbacks, and policy changes can create periods of uncertainty for providers who rely on that referral stream.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Through EVALU8, I provide objective, professionally written evaluation and consulting services designed to help individuals, families, and professionals make informed decisions at the intersection of work, education, and life circumstances.
I’m based in South Florida and serve clients statewide and nationwide through both in-person and remote engagements. My work specializes in functional, evidence-based assessment supported by clear, defensible documentation. I focus on translating complex clinical, educational, and vocational information into practical guidance—whether the goal is career direction, transition planning, workplace decision-making, or records-based consultation in disability- and family-law matters.
As an internationally credentialed vocational evaluator, I bring extensive experience in vocational assessment, career planning, and functional analysis to every case. I approach each engagement with professionalism, neutrality, and respect for the individual, with careful attention to scope, clarity, and real-world applicability.
My service areas include:
– Vocational evaluations and career planning assessments
– Pre-vocational and transition-focused assessments for adolescents
– Educational and learning support evaluations
– Job analysis and workplace demands documentation
– Functional independence and support needs assessments
– Records-based, non-testifying expert consulting
Brand-wise, what I am most proud of is EVALU8’s reputation for objectivity, structure, and credibility. My evaluations are known for being thorough, clearly written, and grounded in functional reality rather than abstract theory. I want readers to know that my brand is built on precision, neutrality, and the belief that well-documented insight can empower better decisions across legal, educational, and workforce settings.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
Miami is a vibrant city unlike any other. There is always something to do, and it’s easy to find stores and restaurants that stay open late into the night, which adds to the city’s energy and convenience.
That said, there are certainly challenges. At times, the city can feel overcrowded, and the traffic can be overwhelming. The heat and humidity can also be difficult to tolerate year-round, and I often find myself wishing for a cooler climate—though our winters are hard to beat. The cost of living is another significant concern, as it can be difficult for the average individual or family to maintain a comfortable lifestyle in South Florida.
Despite these drawbacks—and the many times I’ve considered relocating—there’s truly no place like home. Miami offers a cultural richness, diversity, and lifestyle that would be difficult to replicate anywhere else, and that’s what continues to keep me rooted here.
