Meet John Crupi of Rubicon Maritime

Today we’d like to introduce you to John Crupi.

Hi John, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I grew up in South Florida and started working on boats at a young age. I started out washing and detailing sport fishing boats, learned to fish competitively in tournaments on the East Coast, and owned and operated a successful yacht management company prior to transitioning into larger yachts and worldwide travel.

I have 30+ years of experience as a professional captain. My experience and knowledge have guided expedition programs throughout the world covering hundreds of thousands of miles, 70 countries, and six continents. While at the helm of the Dorothea program (www.dorothea3.com) the operation either towed or traveled in tandem with a sportfishing vessel.

The two boats traveled and fished some of the most remote regions of the world including South America, the South Pacific, Asia, Alaska, Patagonia, Bermuda, Azores, Madeira, Ascension Island, and Brazil.

My expertise gained over the years includes worldwide travel logistics, tandem mothership operations, large tender towing, new build management, and shipyard/refit project management for vessels ranging from 40′ – 150’+. My desire is to make vessel ownership more efficient and enjoyable for the owner through best management practices and realistic expectations.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Traveling the world with even the best maintained and capable vessels presents daily obstacles and challenges. Logistics, weather, safety concerns, mechanical issues, and personnel problems are always at the forefront of planning and execution no matter the distance or destination.

I have experienced and overcome them all by utilizing the resources and technology available within our industry. There is no substitute for knowledge and experience when presented with extreme challenges – fire at sea, lightning strikes, medical concerns, inclement weather, and more – I have experienced it all at sea.

Throughout my career, I have also been tasked with the management of overseeing the new construction of vessels and the complete refits of vessels – each of these scenarios presents a whole different set of challenges in regards to timelines, budgets, managing expectations, and delivering a product that the buyer/owner is completely satisfied with upon delivery.

I personally enjoy the challenges in all aspects of my chosen profession – I have always asked myself how can we make it harder, what hasn’t been done, and how we make the vessel better and improve on what is possible.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Rubicon offers consulting services to vessel owners in a multitude of scenarios from pre-purchase (deciding what vessel best suits your needs and wants), survey assistance (understanding what the condition of the vessel is currently and what it may need in regards to repairs and maintenance), and ownership (usage, costs, maintenance and repairs, travel logistics).

Buyers and owners may think that they only need a broker and a captain to facilitate the above, but having a non-biased third-party advisor with first-hand experience will provide a realistic point of view that may ultimately affect their decision-making process.

My feedback and recommendations are not persuaded by monetary incentives pertaining to the sale of vessel or operation of the vessel. I want my clients to have the best vessel ownership experience, and I believe knowing the facts will allow them to make the most informed decisions regarding the purchase, usage, and maintenance.

Any big plans?
In this business, you never know what projects or opportunities may arise and I am always open to exploring those options both professionally and personally.

I enjoy the challenges with new build projects and spending time in the shipyard, but if an interesting travel itinerary presented itself I would have to weigh that and decide if travel fits into the plan.

The future could take many different paths and I’m thankful for the freedom to choose the right path at the right time.
