Today we’d like to introduce you to Jim McCormick.
Jim, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Photography has been my lifelong passion. A technique came to me on a couple of photo shoots that has sparked a wonderfully creative journey. Abstract Photography, as I define it, involves Macro photography and four key elements: inks, oils, glass, and air. The process involves allowing them to interact and from there I capture thousands of photos. A few are hand-selected as the best to be developed into prints. The feedback from people at shows and online has been truly rewarding. We have a very busy calendar scheduled throughout the fall and winter in Florida, New York, and Cincinnati. We recently visited Italy and made some great connections that will add Murano glass to the photography. We are very excited to share that out when it is ready.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting every business has its struggles. Finding my voice in photography was not the hard part. With all startups, there is a ramp-up phase that requires patience. For art, it requires time and energy to communicate to the collectors the commitment to quality photography that I am making. It reinforces their confidence to invest in my artwork.
The second part that is a challenge is the story that every image is a photograph. Some misunderstand and think that the art is software generated; it is not. Each picture starts and ends as photography.
Like every startup, investing your resources is important. We do not have a full-time gallery yet. But we have identified the right partners, selected shows, fairs and galleries to present the photos. If you would like to see samples, let us know and we will make the time and space to share the artwork. We have many shows coming up.
The McCormick Gallery Collection (supported by JJMDigital) – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Abstract photography is the art and production of the pieces in the business. We offer a variety of ways to mount the photos: conventional prints, acrylic mounts, aluminum pieces, signed and framed limited editions as well. We stay true to the four elements and photography, but experiment with the expression in print, mounting and framing. We are also offering digital licensing and corporate leasing of the artwork for qualified clients.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The moment the first large print rolled out of the high-end printer and I realized that my photos were not just cool images, they were a new dimension in photographic art. I would also add that supporting non-profit art programs has been a recent and important source of pride.
