Today we’d like to introduce you to Jill Oscar.
Hi Jill, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Ever since I can remember, I wanted to be an artist. My mom was a great artist and learned a lot from her. I decided after high school to go into doing makeup. I was so visually stimulated seeing the varieties of color and how creative I can be with all those different shades. I had a contact in NYC I went to see when I was 22 and green! He was the union head at that time I had no idea what that even meant. He talked me out of it! He told me this was no job for a 22 year old . I felt tremendous rejection and rode the bus home in tears. I put it all aside until 30 years later, I had enough of selling fish, alarms, and whatever else and to sell myself! I cold called every production company in Florida. Until one of them gave me a chance. I knew nothing about the television world and no set etiquette or that I had to know hair too! I just felt confident in my artistic skills to get it right. That was 20 years ago! Since then, I have met presidents, politicians, entertainers and actors and beautiful brides! I also started to paint again and have two pieces in a museum and have been commissioned to paint. I got to say, if you don’t try, nothing will happen. A little luck and a lot of perseverance got me to where I am now, a respected artist .
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Nothing was ever handed to me. I didn’t know the right people but I found a way to get hired anyway. I found the biggest struggle was to learn how to do hair! It can be challenging to maintain a client base and find new ones. You cannot be complacent in this business. Contacts move around a lot .
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a professional makeup and fine artist. I specialize in doing great natural looking makeup. I also am known for being great to work with and working quickly. I am most proud of my artistic achievements. I think not every makeup artist can paint, I take my career seriously and pour my soul into it. I really just want people to be happy with their results. That is the biggest reward for me.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I was always pretty quiet, sensitive but always happy. I was always everyone’s cheerleader . I just never believed in myself until recently. I have many interests I love skiing, being out doors in nature, reading, working out, I ran through NYC in the marathon. I love people and traveling the world. When I’m home, I hang out with my dog Jackson.
