Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Loh.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Jennifer. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I grew up watching my father practice medicine as a physician. Seeing the important job he played in people’s lives, and the dedication it took to reach that goal inspired me to consider a career in medicine as well. Of course, the path to becoming a doctor seemed daunting to a child but my mother was the one who gave me the best advice. She told me that time would pass by whether I spent it achieving a goal or not, so it made more sense to use the time I did have working towards a lifelong goal. Those wise words helped me choose to pursue a medical degree and eventually complete a residency in ophthalmology.
After completing my training, I decided to move to Florida and worked in several practices for the next five years. I learned so much from my colleagues and patients at these practices, but I eventually decided the time was right to pursue another goal of mine which was to open up my own practice. I felt that having my own practice would allow me to truly create the work environment that I desired and also give me the freedom to fulfill another dream of raising a family. In 2016 I opened my practice, Loh Ophthalmology Associates, with one employee and a subleased office space, Now, four years later we’ve grown to 6 employees (including another doctor) with our own office space and I’ve also been fortunate enough to get married to a wonderful man and have my first baby along the way 🙂
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Overall I have been very fortunate and blessed to have a relatively smooth road, which I attribute to my wonderful family, husband and friends. However, I did have one personal struggle early on in my career where I went through a divorce from my first husband. It was a really tough time not only emotionally by dealing with the breakup of a relationship and what I thought was my life path, but also realizing that financially I had would have to be completely independent. It taught me to always rely on myself, no matter the situation.
We’d love to hear more about your practice.
My practice, Loh Ophthalmology Associates, is an ophthalmology practice that focuses on the medical and surgical aspects of eye care. We are a seven-person team and our goal is to provide the best care and experience for our patients. We’ve worked hard to create a caring culture for both our staff members and patients, and I think we’ve achieved this based upon the positive feedback we’ve received. We are a busy office but still small enough to give a personalized experience. I like that I get to spend more time with my patients than average, and I think that extra time and communication we have has created a great working environment that both patients and staff appreciate.
I specialize in cataract surgery and dry eye management, as well as comprehensive eye exams. I truly enjoy learning more about our field every day and have participated in lecturing and speaking at national conferences throughout the country and in clinical trials. In addition, I have been proud to be able to give back to our community by spending two days a month teaching young ophthalmologists at a local residency program where we perform charity cataract surgery on patients in need.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memory from childhood is our annual summer trip that we would take visiting my grandparents and extended family in Vancouver, Canada. While we were too far to see our grandparents on a regular basis, those two weeks a year where the family (my parents, grandparents, siblings, aunt and uncle) was together was truly special. Over the years, the venue of the trip would change as we got older, but the concept of family time and togetherness remained. Now that we are all grown up and have become so busy with careers and families of our own, I do appreciate even more that dedicated bonding time as a family.
