Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Fuentes.
Hi Jennifer, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
It started when I first to Broward College and then Florida Gulf Coast University to study art. But then I realized that graphic design is the best course for me. What got me into graphic design started in Broward College. During the first few days, I have noticed many posters, ads, and business cards throughout the campus and realized perhaps I should give graphic design a try.
However, after graduation in 2021, I thought about looking to work at my dream job in Nashville, TN where my dad lives. But I had no luck and no wants me despite struggling so hard to get this degree. So I moved back to Florida to see if I get any luck there. But still no matter how many applications I’ve applied to, I get too rejections despite writing a perfectly written resume and a well written cover letter expressing my interest the job that I am applying to. Yet no luck.
After completing my time in the Disney College Program, I’ve been thinking about going back to school and pursue a career in photography instead, so I can come back to Disney and work as a photopass photographer for all the guests that comes to the park. However, like I mentioned, I, too, have been getting too many rejections applying for a position in photography. Even Disney has rejected my application to work in a position in photopass photography. Today, I have been feeling sad and angry, struggling to look for any jobs in graphic design and/or photography. So I asked myself: what am I going to do right now?
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It wasn’t smooth at all. Here I am living with relatives, while working at a low paid retail store, as I continue to keep searching for any jobs that I want to pursue with my degree in graphic design and photography.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
When I learned about Skillshare through social media, I thought perhaps I can improve my skills in graphic design and photography by taking as many courses that I can take. In one of the courses, I have learned about a company that can help a lot of artists, like me, sell their artwork by creating fabric patterns on a website called Spoonflower. I had a struggle trying to make sure the patterns are attached correctly and not crooked. But I know that those who find my studio profile on Spoonflower are going to love my patterns.
How do you think about luck?
Like I mentioned earlier, bad luck when it comes to searching for a job in graphic design and/or photography. Whenever, I try apply for a position in photography, it keeps mentioning that I need a driver’s license which I don’t have.
