Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer and Jonny
Hi Jennifer and Jonny, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
This business was started as a local, family owned business in 2018. The couple who started the business had decided to move back to their hometown in Texas and decided to sell the business. My husband and I are originally from Montreal. We were looking for a business to buy that would allow us to make a move to the U.S. and allow us to continue to build businesses, which is what we love to do. We decided to buy Harbor Tile & Carpet Cleaning because of its brand reputation and goodwill. We have a family holding company called Conscious Capital and Harbor Tile & Carpet is our first acquisition under that brand. Our other businesses have always been start-ups so we were excited to tackle this new path. That was in 2023. Since then we have rebranded to have a more pet-friendly slant since we love animals, and we knew we wanted Harbor to contribute to animal causes with its social impact. The future looks bright as we continue to grow the business while deepening our relationships with the families we serve. We are clear about who we want to serve (and who we don’t, lol) and the high care and quality we bring to each service appointment. Our mission is to help create spaces that look and feel like a sanctuary of fresh and peace for all the members of the family….two legged and four legged ones alike!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
LOL! Show me an entrepreneur that has had a smooth road! Jim Rohn said, “Don’t wish it were easier, wish you were better.”
Entrepreneurship by nature is a volatile path. As an owner you take all the risk and you are solving problems every single day! So no, definitely not a smooth path. An example of those struggles is equipment breaking down in the middle of a job at midnight so there is no one to call or service our equipment. It can be really stressful but as a team we come together and persevere.
As you know, we’re big fans of Harbor Tile & Carpet Cleaning. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Harbor Tile & Carpet specializes in offering the highest quality in tile and grout cleaning, carpet cleaning, area rugs and upholstery cleaning. What sets us apart is that we actually do not want to compete on price. People are sometimes surprised by this when they call because they try to use price as a bargaining chip…we tell them we might not be the best fit for them. Because we want to offer the highest grade products, using the highest quality equipment and provide the best result (without rushing!) we price ourselves accordingly. Some people want high quality and care and some want the cheapest job possible. There is a customer for everyone.
Also, one of the most important things is that our team is paid a living wage and are able to support their families while thriving. I sometimes mention this to people when they try to haggle with us, and I can see they don’t care but I stick to my guns. One of our main internal missions is that we create an environment where people can thrive and grow. We care A LOT about people. That of course translates into the customers we work with. We strive to create lifetime customers. We want the families that we serve to feel like we are part of their speed dial…when they need their carpets cleaned or their sofa cleaned…just call Harbor Tile and get them over here! We bring treats for the pets, we know every animal’s name, we throw in freebies for them. Our company mission is “unreasonable hospitality.” We create that culture by creating surprise & delight for our regular clients. From bringing croissants or coffee for an early morning service call, to sending over a thank you gift for referrals…we want our clients to feel loved and appreciated.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
On a business level we love Patrick Bet-David, Tommy Mello (The Home Service Millionaire) and A Big Deal podcast by Codie Sanchez. On a personal level I love Michael Singer and listen to his podcast weekly. I am always reading or listening to something that grows my mind and grows my skills. Right now I am reading Buy Back Your Time by Dan Martell.
