Meet Jeanna Michel of JenStyles Hair Collection in Boynton Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeanna Michel.

Jeanna, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
The search was on when I was tired of overpaying for poor quality, store bought hair. I decided to invest my time and money searching for vendors and ordering sample bundles to guarantee the quality and durability of the hair. I invested over $3-4K and sampled hair for 2 years before securing some of the best quality hair on the market. I started off with just $600 worth of inventory, no marketing skills whatsoever, and the passion and determination to bring affordable quality hair to the market. My first year I seen little to none profit but I didn’t let that discourage me. I did research and shortly learned that creating brand identity was the key to take my business to the next level. Business began to grow slowly but surely after implementing the skills I learned by studying social media accounts, taking business development classes and working night and day to improve my styling skills. Being that the hair industry is a very lucrative business, there wasn’t anyone to turn to with the knowledge needed to guide me on how to properly run a hair company. Therefore I had a couple highs and lows and minor setbacks along the way. Entrepreneurship is a very challenging journey but it is also very rewarding. I feel as if every obstacle I have had to face in my career has helped to fuel the drive and determination to keep going!

Has it been a smooth road?
There has been nothing smooth about my journey into entrepreneurship. There have been many times where I was completely broke. I would take all my profits and re-invest back into my business in hopes to see an even bigger return. Before I decided to run my business full time I worked full time for a pain management institute and would leave work and put in another 8-10 hours into running my business. It wasn’t until I felt comfortable seeing what my business brought in on its own before I decided to take the leap of faith and quit my corporate job. I had so many mixed emotions about the decision I had made but I prayed and asked God to order my steps and I was more than sure that he would protect me on this journey. Everyday that I get to follow my dreams I am completely thankful for!

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I own a hair extension company that I run both online and in my salon. I have been in business for over 4 years now with continuous growth. I am also a licensed cosmetologist specializing in hair extensions and natural hair care. We carry Brazilian, Cambodian and Indian Hair Extensions. I am best known for my natural, seamless extension installs and silk presses. Being that I have been able to meet women from all walks of life, it was placed on my heart to start a women’s empowerment network. I am the founder of Women of Purpose and Value, INC. We are a nonprofit organization focused to target women here locally in our communities. To bring forth unity, remind women that we all have a purpose in life and empower them to live out their best lives. I honestly couldn’t answer what sets me apart from other people because that’s never been my focus. I am just thankful that I have the support that I do and proud to represent women in my light.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I wouldn’t get so wrapped up in trying to figure out if your city is the right place to start a business. Although, demographics and logistics play a big part in it being successful. My advice would be to just get started! Start off making sure your business is grounded legally in all aspects. Purchase your LLC or fictitious name. Figure out if your business requires a big/small inventory to get started. Network with people already doing what it is you’re trying to kick off with. Stay motivated and determined! When I started my business I got a ton of controversial feedback regarding the over saturated market. That didn’t stop me from starting my business. You have to be bold, be different! This alone will set you apart from the rest.
