Meet Jason Phillips of Toms river

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Phillips

Hi Jason, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was looking for some extra cash during covid so I started delivering pizzas a couple days a week and then after about a year of that I asked the owner to teach me how to make pizzas and when he showed me how to make pizza and when I made my second one he asked if I was sure I’ve never made pizza before and I told him yes I have not. he said it was kind of ridiculous that I was already better than the guy he’s been training for 4 months a month later I was the main pizza guy. Then I realized I really love what I do or was doing and I started making different pizzas and going home every night and trying new dough recipes to come up with my own dough for about 2 hours every night after work and eventually I knew I wanted to share my creations with everybody I was practically making pizzas every night I think my wife forgot how to cook I was making so much pizza that’s all I wanted to eat so then I saved up some money but some equipment and I started going to farmers markets ,events and weddings everybody loved my product and I started getting regulars come in just for the pizza

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
For me mostly the struggles have been with paperwork permits I have some disabilities and PTSD from the military that keep it make it hard for me to keep on track or even just get motivated to do the paperwork that’s definitely the hardest part for me but my daughter has been helping out and trying to take that portion of it over for me

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
About making the pizzas tweaking the hydrations how long the dough ferments I make a Sourdough pizza all the pizzas I make or from sourdough I make Detroit style Neapolitan Style Sicilians I love the fact that I can come up with any recipes and experiment with it that the pizzas don’t always have to be the same always experimenting people are always more than willing to try them nothing makes me happier when customers tell me this is the best pizza they’ve ever had in this area or is that something reminds them of their childhood a certain flavors I can come up with

Any big plans?
I’m hoping that build food truck and get that out on in the areas couple days a week maybe who knows when they get a brick and mortar
