Today we’d like to introduce you to Janet Garcia.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I am mostly a self-taught artist. I started drawing and painting seriously at the age of 12, so I started taking private art classes with Puertorican artist Andres Bueso. At age 22, I moved to the USA and took some instruction and workshops in portraiture, painting live models. Since I was young, I found myself always drawing faces. Portraiture has always been my passion. I wasn’t really drawn to paint still life’s, probably because it is the essence of people what speaks to me the most. I like to work with several media including oils, acrylics, and pastel.
Please tell us about your art.
I had mostly painted portraits my entire life since it’s my true passion. I find a connection with portraiture that I can’t find in other subjects. Although I also draw and paint other subject matter, I find myself drawn back to portraiture. I would describe it as a magnet for me. My collectors always tell me that the portraits I have painted for them seem to be looking at them no matter the angle at which they are looking at the portrait. The eyes seem to be looking at the viewer at all time. I think there is some truth when people say ‘the eyes are the soul’ of the person.
Do you have any advice for other artists? Any lessons you wished you learned earlier?
I will tell other starting artists to keep practicing and don’t give up. We tend to critique our work too hard. This will prevent us from fully enjoying the process of painting.
