Meet Janet Elinoff of Boca Raton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Janet Elinoff

Hi Janet, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I recently retired, and this chapter of my life is all about gratitude and embracing the phrase, “I am grateful I get to . . .”

Travel:

I am grateful I get to explore the world. Since retiring, I’ve traveled more than I ever have in my entire life! Two highlights from 2024 were my trips to Cuba and Colombia. Both were incredibly unique and transformative experiences. The Cuba trip, organized by Susana Flaum, of the Levis JCC Sandler Center and Sylvia Wilheim, was especially meaningful as it introduced many of us first-time visitors to the resiliency, beauty, and deep history of the Cuban people, including the challenges faced by Jewish Cubans. Similarly, Colombia captivated me with its warm hospitality and perseverance of its Jewish Community. Stepping out of my comfort zone, I not only discovered new places but also forged lasting friendships and gained a profound understanding of different cultures.

Engagement:

I am grateful I get to immerse myself in meaningful programs offered by the Levis JCC Sandler Center. This organization offers an incredible variety of high-quality cultural arts and adult education programs, from theater and art to discussion groups and book reviews. These programs have brought me lively conversations, personal growth, and new connections.

Making a Difference:

I am grateful I get to contribute to my Community with the League of Women Voters, Palm Beach County, by serving as the Chair of the Speakers Bureau Team. The League is a nonpartisan organization to encourage informed participation in government. I lead an energetic Team of volunteers dedicated to educating citizens about democracy, government, and local issues. In the last election season, we reached over 11,000 people through community presentations (also translated into Haitian-Creole and Spanish!) and collaborations with civic organizations. Looking ahead, we aim to expand our impact by enhancing our content, broadening outreach, and engaging with diverse communities.

Well-being:

Finally, I am grateful I get to prioritize my mind, body, and soul. Retirement has allowed me to dedicate time to cooking delicious meals, walking, practicing yoga, and building deeper relationships. I’ve found joy in enhancing not just my life but also the lives of those around me.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It was not at all a smooth ride. Not. At. All.

I have two children, and each has shaped my journey in profound ways. My daughter, who I used to describe as “the taller version of Janet” has grown into someone far beyond me! She’s happily married, living in DC, and making her own unique mark on the world.

My son, however, has been my anchor – the “reason I put my feet on the floor” each day. He has severe autism and was diagnosed in 1996, long before autism became a household name. This was an era before smartphones or laptops, so my mom and I spent countless hours scouring libraries and bookstores, looking for information.

Then came a pivotal moment. I was standing next to the then Executive Director of the Adolph & Rose Levis Jewish Community Center and stated, “We don’t even take care of our own children.” That moment changed everything. I was invited to join the board with the specific goal of building a Special Needs Department. With the help of generous donors and passionate leaders, we created a robust and vibrant Levis JCC Helene & Roy Schwedelson Special Needs Department, which continues to thrive under the leadership of Ali Landman. And I’m proud to say my son is now thriving in a small group home in Broward County that provides him the care, support, and compassion he deserves.

While life has presented challenges, I’ve learned to approach them with perseverance, a sense of humor, and resiliency. Each obstacle has taught me something valuable, leading me to this rewarding chapter where I enjoy the fruits of determination, gratitude, and meaningful connections.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I retired after a long successful career as a fiduciary specialist. I began my career in the financial services industry as a Certified Public Accountant but I quickly realized my true passion was helping individuals create legacies of or their families and charitable organizations.

In an industry often dominated by men and technical discussions, I brought a creative and personal approach to client conversations. One of my techniques involved drawing family trees during meetings. This simple, yet power exercise, helped clients express their feelings about family members and share their unique dynamics. Understanding these emotional components allowed me to propose alternative solutions that were not only financially sound but also deeply meaningful to my clients.

Throughout my career, I had the privilege of collaborating with incredible teams. Together, we worked closely to navigate complex situations, combining our skills and insights to achieve the best possible outcomes for clients. I believe my ability to foster teamwork and encourage open communication among colleagues contributed significantly to our shared success.

What set me apart was my ability to simplify and clarify the complexities of the financial world, making it accessible and understandable for clients and their families. My personal experience as a parent of a child with a disability also shaped my approach. It gave me a deeper sense of empathy and allowed me to create space for crucial conversations that led to truly creative and impactful solutions.

What I’m most proud of is the trust and lasting relationships I built with clients and their families over the years. These connections were about so much more than finances – they were about helping people create legacies that aligned with their values and priorities.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
My Grandmother, Nana Kay, was a pioneer – a woman far ahead of her time. She served as Treasurer of Hadassah in New York City in the 1960s and had a vision that each of her daughter-in-law would serve as Treasurer of their local chapter. When my mom took on the role, she needed help with the books – and that’s where I came in!

At just eight years old, I was tasked with keeping the finances straight for the local chapter. I still remember having to stand up to turn the green ledger pages! That experience not only sparked my fascination with money but also laid the foundation for
my lifelong journey in financial services and charitable work.

Looking back, it is easy to see where I get my financial and philanthropic inclinations. My Grandmother’s influence and my early exposure to managing finances instilled in me a sense of purpose and the importance of giving back.

Reflecting on my journey, I am grateful I get to live a life filled with connection, purpose, and growth. From the values instilled in me during childhood to the meaningful career I built, and the opportunities I now have in retirement, I am profoundly thankful. I get to build relationships, travel, and explore. I get to contribute to my community, foster creativity, and make a difference. Most importantly, I get to cherish the moments, lessons, and people who have shaped my path. This chapter of my life is truly a celebration of gratitude and possibility.
