Meet Jacqueline Guzman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacqueline Guzman.

Jacqueline, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Hi South Florida! My name is Jacqueline Guzman-Scott, a New York-Rican from Brooklyn, residing in Sunrise. I am very honored to share my story/testimony with you! For starters, I am a mother of three children, married to my best friend, Emmet Scott on February 14th, 2019, who has four children of his own!

Before getting married, I was a single mom for 12 years, with a full-time career, continuing school and coaching recreational sports. In 2012, at the young age of 30, I survived TWO Heart Attacks. This led me on my advocacy journey as a Local Spokeswoman with The American Heart Association, educating women in the Fight Against Heart Disease. (The #1 Killer in Women)

In 2015, my son Jose (eight years old at the time) expressed his desire to skip birthdays and give back to the homeless, foster children and our military troops. Leading the way, he inspired me to continue making an impact in our community. Over the years, we have volunteered with organizations such as HandsOn Broward, YMCA and Ronald McDonald’s House to name a few.

In 2018, I decided to get civically engaged with the City of Sunrise by attending the National Parent Leadership Training Institute through Family Central. This is a nationally-recognized, comprehensive parent leadership program developing leadership skills, civics knowledge, self-confidence and skills to make a difference in the lives of others.

In 2019, I continued learning about Sunrise Government by signing up for Sunrise’s Citizen’s Police Academy, Community Emergency Response Team and attended their Residents Leadership Academy. In this program, it provided a behind-the-scenes look at the City of Sunrise operations, including programs, services, departments, and facilities. While working full-time and attending RLA, I completed training to be a Volunteer Child Advocate with the Guardian ad Litem Program in Ft. Lauderdale. Additionally, I took on the role of PTO Vice-President at Westpine Middle School in Sunrise, FL. Seeing the significant impact community service had on my children, it was paramount to get more youth involved! With the support of Westpine Middle School’s Principal, Mr. Johnson, we launched a volunteer program called Panthers with a Purpose. This program is a monthly volunteer opportunity for students to positively empower their peers and community with various service projects.

As a Heart Attack survivor, community advocate, child champion, parent leader, wife and most importantly, a mother… I believe the residents in Sunrise, FL need a leader like me to assist in guiding our government in the right direction for our community and families. Therefore, I am running to become the next City of Sunrise Commissioner in Seat D.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Well, I can’t speak for all, but I can speak for some and say that while I was a single mom, it was not been easy. Between my medical scare and the negative stereotype the society has on single mother’s, there were times I felt defeated. However, I never allowed that to stop me on having aspirations and goals. Over the years, I have been asked, “How do you do it?” My answer is, by the grace of God! As well as the support of my children, my mother, and my husband.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
As a community activist, I live to serve others and give back to the community. With COVID-19 on the rise, I there is and there will continue to be a need. Therefore, I founded the COVID-19 Support Network, which is a team of licensed professionals providing free counseling services to individuals struggling with mental health, drug addiction, unemployment and financial hardship due the devastating effects of the pandemic.

When I am elected on November 3rd as Sunrise Commissioner, my mission will be to offer unemployment support to our residents, financial workshops/seminars to local businesses to help get their companies back on track and develop a career/workforce program for young adults who can’t afford to go to college. Additionally, I will expand my COVID-19 Support Network.
In order to make this happen, I need the financial support to help fundraise my campaign! I am asking all my Latina’s, mothers, daughters and those of you who feel we need more WOMEN LEADERS today to join me on this journey. Please visit my website and donate. Thank you!|
