Today we’d like to introduce you to Jackie Salimen.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Jackie. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I do things counter-mainstream. Typically, people party when they are young and get serious only in their third decade. I started working when I was 15, working and traveling, soon married, then started a family at 21. Rising two kids with love and balancing work as a model and cosmetology, realizing that life without work is not very fulfilling, so nowadays, I balance work on some fascinating projects and enjoying life. If you love what you do, you’ll never have to work a day in your life.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Growing up, I witnessed so many things that stopped others from achieving their goals. Lots of play and a very little discipline. I told myself I would travel my own path. I saw close friends who were gifted students and athletes torn apart from drugs and alcohol. My best friend struggled with substance abuse and lost the battle. I promised myself I would remain disciplined to my path. I wanted something different. I refused to let the outside world ruin my internal world. I didn’t want any outside influences to control me. My discipline gave me options.
Most importantly, it gave me freedom to be me. Many years later, I still hear the same things. Chill, relax, that schedule’s not necessary. I work hard and make sacrifices so I can have choices in life. I’m grateful for the special people in my life who helped me stay on the right path. Find your circle of positive people and keep them close.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
As a Model, my favorite shoots are when I get to express a lot of emotion. I enjoy challenging myself to pull out different attitudes, expressions and poses to give a strong and meaningful look. As a model we are selling our look, personality and professionalism.
As a makeup artist, my goal is to make women look good and feel beautiful. My signature look is gorgeous skin, sun-kissed faces that seem to grow from within. After makeup workshops, I master my craft on the wedding, fashion and advertising make up shoots. Classic beauty, effortless style. I strongly believe in the beauty that all women possess.
“Seeing colours that complement each other in nature is very inspiring. I know I have achieved my goal when the makeup is not the focus, rather a stunning face where the features stand out and are complemented. “
What were you like growing up?
Born Brazilian American, I was fascinated by art and fashion from a young age, and modeling gave me creativity and experience in many ways. My dedication to the science, technique and beauty of healthy skin is just one of the reasons I become one of the makeup artists in business and an avid traveler. The nature of a freelance artist is not static but constantly changing.
