Meet Hope Friedman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hope Friedman.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Hope. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I founded The Gift of Hope breast cancer foundation shortly after I underwent treatment for breast cancer, I met many women who shared their struggles in paying day-to-day bills while undergoing their treatment. I was inspired by their stories but disheartened by the challenges they had to face.

Shortly after I finished treatment, The Gift of Hope, a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization was born. We are dedicated to providing financial support to women in need during their course of treatment for breast cancer. Many women must take a leave of absence from work while in treatment, and some have little or no other income. Many are single mothers. The Gift of Hope believes that no woman should have to worry about how their bills are going to get paid. They should only concentrate on getting well.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There were many struggles along the way. Finding donors and funding. Learning how to run a non-profit. struggling with the loss of many of the women we assist. finding wonderful people who have the passion and need to help others, and to be part of my vision.

Please tell us about your organization.
We receive referrals from the American Cancer Society, Susan B. Komen and local hospitals and social workers. Our support id direct we pay monthly household bills such as electricity, water and phone, we also provide public and gas cards. We provide these services for up to four months. Over the years we have helped hundreds of women ages 27 to 87 throughout the state of Florida. We are proud to say over 98 percent of the monies we raise go directly to the women we help.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
That’s a tough question, I have so many wonderful memories. I think I just loved spending summer vacations with my Grandmother at her summer bungalow.
