Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Fox.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
When I was younger, I was a “Tumblr girl” and would always try to do my makeup like Lana Del Rey, Marina Diamandis, and Hayley Williams. I would stay in my room for hours trying different makeup looks and taking pictures. One day when I was 14, my aunt offered to do my makeup because she became a MaryKay girl so I was very ecstatic about it. Once she finished my makeup I remember thinking to myself “I never thought I could look so glamorous.” From there, my love for makeup grew.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I’ve always been lucky to have a good support system to push me to follow my dreams, but honestly, my biggest obstacle has always been myself. I would always compare myself to those around me telling myself I wasn’t good enough to be an artist. When I was 19 I really thought about going to school for makeup so I could learn to perfect the craft, but it was a professional makeup artist who discouraged me. They told me “Real makeup artists don’t go to school, maybe think twice about your career.” I was always so hard on myself, not showing myself grace for my love of beauty. There was even a time where I didn’t even want to touch makeup because I was so discouraged. In 2020 a friend of mine named Jasmine Ornelas asked me to do makeup for a photo shoot that ended up in a magazine. Even with my makeup in a magazine, I kept telling myself that I was not good enough. It wasn’t until 2021 when a professional makeup artist named Amanda from Nova Makeup and Hair reached out to me on Instagram asking me if I wanted to come work with her. She really believed in my talent and wanted to teach me. From there that’s when my career in makeup really began.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
As of right now, I’m just a small makeup artist. I mostly do editorial makeup for photoshoots and events. People usually know me for creative makeup because I love doing things that are colorful and different.
At this point in time, I believe anyone could be a makeup artist, but it’s the experience you leave with the customer that sets me apart from others. Something I learned from working with Amanda is that when we do people’s makeup, the customer is allowing themselves to be vulnerable giving their full trust in us to take care of them. These are their identities and we have to take care of them. Makeup is a form of therapy.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Something surprising people don’t know about me is I’m currently pursuing my bachelor’s degree and psychology and I work at an Eating Disorder Treatment Center. Makeup and psychology is my passion, so why not pursue both. I’m doing two forms of therapy.
