Today we’d like to introduce you to Hannah Rebecca Scott.
Hannah, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Interestingly enough, my business started during a period when I was homeless. I was sleeping on the floor of one of my friend’s houses and my cousin said to me Becky you’re always making products for hair why don’t you create a business out of that?
So from there my best friend and I gave birth to what is now, the guru effects/luxe honey studios. My aunt showed me how to make hair grease like my grandmother did before me and we tested out different concoctions to come up with the hair products like my custard and my avocado hair mask although sometimes the hair mask would explode I never gave up.
I got to where I am today because I knew that I was my ancestors, wildest dreams and I knew that I had to keep going because I have people depending on me to make them proud. I enrolled in cosmetology school during the pandemic to hone my craft, and I learned different techniques, but hair has always been a passion of mine from a very young age,
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Nothing worth it in life ever comes easy. It was a struggle when I first started because I didn’t know what I was doing.
When I had my launch in 2016, I invited 100 people only six people showed up and I almost threw in the towel but those six people became 60 people which then became 600 people. Finances also played a major part in the struggles because I was so young I didn’t have any credit.
I knew nothing about business credit. I knew nothing about business loans or grants, so everything was out of my pocket.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a licensed cosmetologist and a hair care guru. I specialize in customizing and coloring, not only wigs but natural hair as well. I care more about the hair under the wig because when the wig comes off, you still have to feel confident and pretty with the hair that grows out of your head. I’m also a make-up artist, specializing in more than just glam, makeup special effects make-up as well.
So I make sure that all of my clients feel like new person and love the skin that they’re in when they leave my chair. What I am most proud of is my line of wigs and my Cosmetics line. What sets me apart is my attention to detail as well as my attention to the client.
A lot of people get into this industry because you can make good money quickly if you’re good at what you’re doing. I got into this industry because I wanted to help people learn to love themselves through hair.
What do you think about happiness?
I’m a naturally happy person, I have a natural high. What makes me the happiest is my family.
Everything that I do in this life is because of them and for them.
