Meet George South of Fairfield, California

Today we’d like to introduce you to George South.

George, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I am a first generation American, my family migrated over from Jamaica.

I was born in Miami, and relocated to Lauderhill in HS after my parents got divorced.

I have one brother, and I am the oldest child.

I am married and have 4 children (two sets of twins).

I am a member of Alpha Phi Alpha , Spr.15 (Beta Beta Lambda)

My wife is a teacher and was a collegiate athlete (pole vaulter for Bethune Cookman University)

I started playing sports in 8th grade (basketball for the city team in north miami beach), I played football in hs (rb,lb) jv at NMB high, then RB & FB on the varisty team at Piper High in Sunrise.
I also ran track in highschool, and played collegiate football for Webber International University (slot receiver and KR/PR)

I received my BA from Florida Atlantic in 2011 in Criminal Justice.

Then I went to law school at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, College of Law in Orlando, FL.

I worked as a consultant for the City of Miami City Attorney’s Office, then I became a prosecutor with the Broward State Attorney’s Office. After getting advice/ inspiration by a mentor (Judge Elijah Williams) I applied for the Air Force JAG Corps.

I am Active Duty military (USAF) currently stationed in California and I am a Senior Prosecutor. I am assigned to the office of Special Trial Counsel and supervise junior counsel at 20 military installations.

My primary hobbies are basketball, running, and martial arts. My
Children and I are currently studying kenpo jiu jitsu.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Adjusting to the military culture was a bit difficult, having to learn all of the customs and courtesies took some time. Moving away from my parents was also particularly difficult (with 2 young children). Not having family support was tough, but we got the hang of it, and were blessed with another set of twins.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I handle cases involving the most serious offenses you can think of (rape murder, kidnapping, etc, and It is my responsibility to ensure that justice is served. Meaning that I ensure investigations are conducted properly and that the accused receives a fair trial.

Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
Growing up in Miami/ Lauderhill made me well rounded and allowed me to experience a lot of things and meet a lot of great people from all over the world. Those experiences have helped guide me to where I am.

Additionally, I am a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated. I am a Spring 15, initiate of Beta Beta Lambda.

My family and my brotherhood have been incredbily instrumental in motivating me to succeed.
