Today we’d like to introduce you to Fred Romero.
Fred, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
In 1974 a few years after arriving Miami, I owned a small forwarding company and in the process of offering to transport chemicals to the dredging of the seaport in Port Au Prince Haiti I contacted the US Department of Transportation’s administrator, Research and Special Programs Administration or RSPA in Washington. And that’s when I got involved with the Hazardous Material Regulations (HMR). During this period there wasn’t much demand for my expertise when in 1982 I had my first training session with Pan American Airlines.
During this period I operated as FA Romero Dangerous Goods until the tragic crash of the ValueJet flight 592 in May of 1996 where over 100 passengers and crew perished, shortly thereafter I incorporated as Dangerous Goods of America. Today we train and provide services to major airlines, steamship lines, cargo handlers, freight forwarders, shippers, and suppliers that offer or transports dangerous goods.
Has it been a smooth road?
Until the end of 1990’s I held a full time job with a major carrier and as an expert in hazmat transportation I was required by certain carriers to take specialty courses such as the safe transport of explosives and Radioactive materials of which took time off my regular job, eventually I resigned in order to pursue my carrier in the safe transport of dangerous goods.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Dangerous Goods of America story. Tell us more about the business.
Training: Teaching those that participate in my training session on how to use these regulations for air, ocean or ground (IATA, ICAO and the HMR).
Compliance: Helping companies by ensuring that their shipments are prepared in compliance with all applicable regulations.
Legal services : we mitigate cases for those that have received proposed civil penalties.
In addition to above, we sell supplies i.e. labels, specialty packages texts, including the 24 hour emergency response telephone numbers, etc. As a company our proudest moments is the fact that our services makes air travel safe, that because of our existence and from the 40 plus years in this industry no loss of aircraft, ocean vessel, property nor persons have been lost.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
As it is now, the transportation regulations of these goods mandates companies that transport or offer to transport these dangerous goods to obtain training certifications.
