Meet Erica Sheldon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erica Sheldon.

Erica, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Design has always been a heavy part of my life. My style is defined by use of color, graphic compositions and constructed visuals to expand the possibilities, creating a reality of my own. Fresh out of college, the natural thing for a designer at the time was to approach ad agencies, which I did.

After almost a decade of the “mad men” lifestyle, while juggling my art career, I ultimately decided that if I was ever going to pour my heart into my work, I had to fully embrace the starving artist in me. Fully immersed, I dove into the art scene with my typography, showing at Art Basel Miami Beach with Superfine! House of Art & Design, Young Artist Initiative (now Raw Pop Up), Miami Live Sessions, and The Void among others. This was a defining moment in my career — a deviation from the nine-to-five forced me to commit to the new direction I was heading.

Has it been a smooth road?
Life, as a road, is almost certainly never smooth. That being said, those bumps are what make the journey worthwhile. The lessons and friendships gained from the rough parts are what continue to shape me as a person and fundamentally strengthen my art and our community around us. The ups and downs may seem like obstacles but I take them as periods of learning in the overall ebb and flow.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Erica Sheldon – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
I approach both introspective and extrospective angles to express concerns with identity, transculturation, environmental issues, morality, technology dependence, and the ins and outs of what make living meaningful. My technique is to ever so slightly whisper messages with a tropical façade using cryptic words, patterns, and typography.

Miami is laced throughout my work: tropical and bright but also grimy and diverse. Passione per la vita e un forte impegno per la famiglia e la comunità. As a society, we often fail to remember we are a collective species and through my work, I hope to reunite.

I specialize in custom lettering, illustrations, site-specific installations, and street art, as well as work that has exhibited in galleries worldwide.

What’s your outlook for the industry in our city?
The very essence of South Florida makes it the perfect place to be creative.
