Today we’d like to introduce you to Ellery Gutiérrez.
Ellery, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was born in Maracay, Aragua State, Venezuela. When I was a young child, I discovered in art history books the paintings of the Renaissance and Baroque Italian masters, where light, shadows and well-made figures called my attention. Such was my enthusiasm that I started out as a self-taught artist, experimenting with drawings. Then at 20 years of age, I moved to Caracas, Venezuela, where I began taking courses in drawing and painting with various artists, specializing in different oil techniques such as human figure, portraits, still life, fruits, flowers and others. These studies were carried out for ten years.
I devoted myself to painting in 2004, working exclusively on creating works for my clients and for national and international exhibitions. My work has been around the world exhibiting my themes of fruits and flowers.
The bad political, social and economic situation that Venezuela is experiencing forced me to leave my country and to look for other markets for my work. Today I live in the beautiful city of Sanford, Florida and whoever sees my work, delights with this exquisite painting. From Sanford, I want to project my paintings all over the US.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When I started my artistic career in Venezuela in 2004, the success was immediately, the commissions of painting, and the exhibitions came in and that gave me to live comfortably, then in 2013 the political and economic situation in Venezuela worsened and also the artistic activities, such as exhibitions and art events were affected. Because of all this and the insecurity that affected me personally, I decided to emigrate from my country six months ago. I am currently making my work known and I have participated in several exhibitions in Seminole County and Orange County.
What else should we know about your and your work?
I am a hyperrealist painter. Hyperrealist painting was born in New York in the early 1970s thanks to the color photography that painters of that time used to create their works in large formats and with a sharper, more detailed approach is a radical style of realistic painting.
I specialize in fruits, flowers, portraits, human figure, still lifes, etc.
I made my work known first through the galleries, then through social networks and my website. I believe that social networks have played a very important role in the dissemination of my work worldwide. I am grateful to God for the talent he has given me to be able to paint the way I do.
In my personal experience, painting is one of the most beautiful meditations, since in the act of painting I feel peace and joy when I see that where the brush passes through, a beautiful work is being developed, perhaps that makes me different from others.
What is your favorite childhood memory?
What comes to mind, is that when I was a teenager, I had a great desire to draw and I made self-portraits with a mirror and portraits of some family members.
