Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Charron.
Elizabeth, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I began my journey into midwifery as a young single mother of two. Before I found my calling as a midwife, I was unsatisfied, having had many different occupations. The only part of my life that I truly enjoyed was parenting. Thus, in my mind, a career midwifery would be an opportunity to have constant contact with infancy. It also satisfies my need to care and take care of others. It soon became clear to me that it was so much more than just infants. It’s about the mother: empowering and guiding her to follow her instincts and to believe in herself. What drives me and replenishes me in this field is the responsibility of teaching her to listen to her body and to the baby, she is creating within and ultimately making sure that her transition into motherhood is a safe and enjoyable one.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Midwifery school is not for the faint of heart. It is near impossible to earn a living while attending school. However, I was blessed with unemployment during my first year. This meant that I needed to do all of my required births before my benefits ran out. By the skin of my teeth, I made it. Later when I purchased the Palms Birth House it was almost immediately apparent that I had bit off more than I could chew. The legalities of being a midwife are many, being a birth center owner expanded that three fold. The moms that I cared for during that transitional period were so supportive and patient with me. They will be forever in my heart. Without Tiffany Hanlon, my office manager and friend, I don’t know that the birth house would have made it this far. Despite the struggles it took to get to this point, I wouldn’t change anything as I have grown as a professional and as a business owner.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Palms Birth House – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
The goal of the Palms Birth House is to create a community. We want our families to come during pregnancy and stay through the preschool years and beyond. To facilitate community we have established a new type of prenatal care called Sacred Circle. The prenatal visits are done in a class format together with other mothers due within the same month. They are run by a facilitator who discusses topics pertinent to whatever stage of pregnancy the mothers are in. We have guest speakers who come in to discuss everything from cloth diapering to pelvic floor exercise. The mothers are then pulled into the prenatal room one by one to complete their visit with the midwife privately. We have found that by the end of the pregnancy these mothers have created such an intense bond that they often remain friends for years afterward. What sets this practice apart from other prenatal and delivery care is more individualized attention. Our moms during labor are allowed to eat, drink and move around freely at their leasure, with minimal intervention. We support and provide all necessary prenatal education to allow for informed decision making and optimal natural birth experience.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
At the moment the birth house only staffs one midwife. We would like to expand to other providers, offering more services to our concierge care and offering more classes that expand through different periods of motherhood. Continuously finding ways to provide care and support for mothers and the community. Being able to support more female non-profit organizations and offering outreach programs that target maternal care.
