Meet Dr. Kate Campbell of Bayview Therapy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Kate Campbell.

Hi Dr. Campbell, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
As an entrepreneur and founder of multiple businesses, Bayview Therapy (https://www.bayviewtherapy.com/) and the Private Practice Startup (https://www.privatepracticestartup.com/), my journey has been filled with lots of successes and challenges. It’s been exciting, stressful, and rewarding all at the same time. I’m grateful for the many lessons learned along the way and proud of how far I’ve come especially since I didn’t have any formal business training while in school.

I grew up in a family of hard-working entrepreneurs, which is where my entrepreneurial spirit was born. My mother’s side of the family (Kathy Ireland Mitchell) owned and operated Ireland’s Inn, a hotel and restaurant on Fort Lauderdale beach for 60+ years which has since been redeveloped into the beautiful Auberge Beach Residences and Spa. My grandfather, hotelier Jack Ireland, was incredibly kind and caring to all the guests and staff at the hotel.

As a child, I remember seeing how hard he worked to ensure everyone was happy and well taken care of. I always looked up to him and shared the same values of helping people, which is one of the many reasons why I’m so passionate about what we do at Bayview Therapy. My father (Andy Mitchell) has always been a talented visionary who later in life became a real estate developer in South Florida (his latest project is the Ritz Carlton Residences in Pompano Beach).

He helped inspire my private practice vision, mission, passion, and purpose while I was in grad school. Although hospitality and entrepreneurship run deep in my family, I didn’t go to business school or get an MBA. I followed my passion for psychology and graduated with my Master’s in 2006 and Doctorate in 2011 from Nova Southeastern University’s Marriage and Family Therapy program.

As soon as I graduated with my Masters’s and became a Registered Intern, I opened up my first company and started renting office space at a local psychologist’s office while I was working toward my Ph.D. This allowed me to gain more experience in the private practice realm without having a lot of high overhead expenses. If you’re familiar with the movie, The Field of Dreams, I held that magical belief of “if I build it, they will come”.

I didn’t expect entrepreneurship to be easy by any means, but I didn’t realize how hard it was until I was actually “in it”. However, I was determined and I knew that with a lot of hard work and perseverance, I would figure it out one way or another. I made it my mission to learn as much as possible about business, entrepreneurship, branding, and marketing. My goal was to launch my own counseling and psychology group practice in Fort Lauderdale as soon as I graduated with my Doctorate degree in 2011.

During the 5 year journey toward completing my PhD, I experienced the pros and cons of various practices which allowed me to reverse engineer my vision for a group practice. I poured my heart and soul into developing a reputable brand, amazing team, unique company culture, and solid foundation with our streamlined systems and marketing strategies.

In 2011, my group practice dream became a reality when we launched Bayview Therapy, which quickly became one of South Florida’s most trusted psychology and counseling private practices. Over the years, I’ve grown our practice into a team of 30+ expert clinicians with three office locations (Fort Lauderdale, Coral Springs, and Plantation, Florida) to better serve our South Florida community.

In addition to my group practice, I launched an online private practice coaching business in 2016. I’m the proud co-founder of the Private Practice Startup where we inspire private practitioners to build and grow their dream private practices. Along with my business partner, Katie Lemieux, we co-host a podcast with over 1 million downloads and growing.

Here we are in 2023 and it’s been over 17 years since I launched into private practice. It’s been a wild journey with a lot of unexpected challenges, insane amounts of hard work and dedication, late nights and long days, countless business books and podcasts, tears, triumphs, tons of networking, and a whole lot of hustle. It’s been an incredible experience and I wouldn’t change a thing. I’ve experienced so much growth and valuable life lessons along the way.

I’m grateful to my amazing husband, Brent Campbell (who is also an entrepreneur), for his unyielding support, teamwork, encouragement, late-night tech troubleshooting, and belief in our vision at Bayview Therapy. It’s truly an honor being able to help so many children, adults, couples, and families in our South Florida community. I’m beyond grateful for our amazingly talented team of clinicians who absolutely love what they do. I can’t wait to see how many lives we will impact in the decades to come!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
After having my second son in December 2019, I was excited to be back in the office after taking 3-month maternity leave, but I was only there for two days before we went on “lockdown” due to the impending Covid-19 pandemic. The whole world was panicking and I was no exception… It was a crazy time for everyone and one that I’m grateful is behind us (to an extent).

I was super sleep deprived of being up in the middle of the night with our baby, overwhelmed from trying to work from home with my other son who was 5 years old, and trying to stay positive as a leader for both of my businesses (Bayview Therapy and my online business – Private Practice Startup). It was an extremely stressful time trying to figure out how to survive the pandemic as a family with young kids at home while keeping multiple businesses afloat.

As for Bayview Therapy, I was drowning in high overhead expenses with hardly any income coming in for the first month after we went on lockdown. I was terrified, overwhelmed, and exhausted, but I knew we needed to adapt quickly otherwise I would lose everything I had poured my heart and soul into for over a decade. I was determined to figure out a solution that allowed us to stay true to our values and ethics as an organization, keep our commitments to our team, and safely provide ongoing counseling services for our community.

After doing a ton of research and talking with many other group practice owners, I decided to pivot our business model and worked with a healthcare law attorney to help us navigate the necessary changes, while still staying true to the values that make our business model unique from most other group practice models.

We moved the majority of our counseling and psychological services to telehealth but also kept a portion of our services in person since telehealth is not effective for all types of clients or services (ie: psychological evaluations, EMDR, young children, etc).  It was a blessing that mental health professionals are considered “essential workers” so we were able to legally keep our doors open for business with extensive screening and safety protocols in place.

Looking back at 2020, it was a very challenging time for everyone in our world (some more than others). We were all navigating a shared trauma as we did our best to survive the pandemic and adapt to our “new norm” as human beings. As an entrepreneur managing multiple small businesses while simultaneously having young kids at home, it was an exhausting and stressful time, but we got through it.

We learned a ton, grew stronger, and created new systems, policies, and procedures that have enhanced our businesses in many ways. I’m beyond grateful that I didn’t give up in the face of adversity and persevered through that really difficult time. I’m proud of our journey, the failures, the successes, and being able to help so many people along the way.

It’s amazing to see how far Bayview Therapy has come since we launched in 2011. I continuously pour my heart and soul into this business and it shows. Nothing makes me happier than knowing our team and clients absolutely love being in our offices. It’s extremely rewarding to make a positive impact in our South Florida community.

We all have different ways of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
My definition of success has evolved over the past two decades. As I move through different phases of business and stages of life, it changes. I used to think that in order to be successful, I had to work long hours and do “all the things” myself, but I then became consumed by my business and worked myself into the ground. It took me a while to realize that the “hustle and grind culture” in entrepreneurship only leads to exhaustion and burnout. It’s not healthy, realistic, or sustainable.

Many years ago, I redefined my definition of success and evaluated my relationship with my businesses so that I could make the necessary changes to realign with my values. One of the many reasons I became an entrepreneur was to be my own boss, make my own schedule, make a bigger impact in our community, and have the freedom and flexibility to take time off when needed.

It took well over a decade before I realized how to effectively systemize and streamline my business, but now that I’ve done so it’s made a huge difference. It’s allowed us to scale by adding new team members and multiple locations so we could make a bigger impact while maintaining a healthier work/life balance.

Now that I’ve got a lot more experience under my belt, I’d say that success is the ability to stay in alignment with my values both personally and professionally. It’s living a purpose-filled, balanced life. It’s staying true to my vision and mission for making a difference while prioritizing my personal goals and family life.
