Today we’d like to introduce you to Yeisel Barquin.
Hi Yeisel, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
I had a very humble upbringing in Havana, Cuba. After the loss of my mother, at the age of 14, my family tried to bring me to the United States to reunite with my father. I immigrated from Cuba at the age of 18 with a dream of becoming a doctor and being a healer. When I came to the United States, I didn’t speak English. I had never seen a computer and I didn’t know how to drive, but I had a mission in my life. The passion to become a doctor led me to overcome all the challenges that I had to face to get into Medical School in the United States.
Attending the University of Miami Medical School was a dream accomplished, and during my training, I realized I had a passion for disease prevention. Therefore, I decided to specialize in Internal Medicine. I also developed a passion for women’s health, and I took the women’s health track during my residency program, which I completed at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami.
After residency, I had to move to a rural area, and practiced for three years in Kentucky. At that time, my passion for prevention and wellness continued to grow, so I began to train in functional and integrative medicine. Upon returning to Miami, I worked as a general practitioner for nine years at Baptist Health of South Florida. After several years of training in traditional medicine, functional medicine and mental health as well as understanding the shortcomings of our current health system, I decided to create Eudaimonia Miami Inc.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The first struggle was the acquisition of a new language at the age of 18, also getting educated in how to use technology since I had never been exposed to a computer before. The process of application to Medical School was arduous and strenuous, too.
Practicing medicine in rural Kentucky for 3 years was a challenging experience, yet a great opportunity to grow my passion for prevention and wellness. The process of obtaining my certification in Functional Medicine has not been easy since trying to study, managing a busy practice while being a full time mom was hard to balance.
Finally, the transition from a full time employed physician to setting up Eudaimonia Miami has been my most challenging adventure.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
After understanding the shortcomings of our current Health System, I decided to found Eudaimonia Miami Inc. to empower patients to achieve the highest state of health by providing personalized care.
The Ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle defined “eudaimonia” as the highest human good, the state or condition of “good spirit” and living well. From 350 years B.C. to the 21st century humans still strive for the same virtue, a life well lived.
I offer 100% personalized plans tailored for each patient:
-TRADITIONAL PRIMARY WELLNESS CARE.
-FUNCTIONAL/HOLISTIC MEDICINE.
-OBESITY/BARIATRIC MEDICINE.
-MENTAL/BEHAVIORAL HEALTH.
-EXECUTIVE MEDICINE
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
The new generations are becoming more health conscious and interested in prevention, wellness, and a functional holistic approach to health as it has been proven to impact longevity but most importantly quality of life.
The current health system support and resources have been geared towards treatment of chronic diseases that could have been prevented with early intervention. Therefore, in the next 5 to 10 years I see a growth in my field of expertise as most individuals are looking for a personalized approach to medicine.
